Quick fire test 1. Give the key term for the following language: He was ‘up the creek without a paddle’ so to speak 2. Draw the map for a simple joint reason argument 3. What is the difference between an argument and a rant? 4. What is the intermediate conclusion in this argument: Phill worked hard today, so he can have cake as a reward, but we are out tonight so he will have to have it tomorrow instead 5. Name a reason indicator word and a conclusion indicator word 6. Is this argument joint or independent? Reading improves your knowledge and vocabulary. Reading is also a fun way to pass the time. Therefore you should take up reading 7. What is the name of this map? 8. Draw a map for the following argument: Ben said Thailand was the best, and lonely planet say it is amazing so we should go there. British airways also have a sale on flights to Thailand so we should book now for summer 9. Why can Jargon be used as a persuasive technique in an argument? 10. Name the 5 main (irrelevant) appeals

5 fallacies of arguments 1.Straw Man 2.Ad Hominem 3.Tu Quoque 4.Slippery Slope 5.False Dilemma - misrepresenting/ distorting the opponent’s argument - attacking the opponent themselves instead of the argument - justifying your argument because other people did it too - jumping to unlikely/ distant consequences to be more dramatic - restricting the options to be more dramatic

Which is which? Match them up on your sheet “Gordon Brown says that children should stay at school until they are 18. What does he know? He’s just a pompous idiot!” “I’m going to steal a chocolate bar from the shop on the way home from school. It’s OK, because I’ve seen Timmy do it.” “If I lend my friend some money then all my friends will want to borrow some money.” “Rebecca lives in the UK. She doesn’t live in England therefore she must live in Wales.” “Jennifer ate the last biscuit. Why would she want to leave us starving like that.” Ad Hominem False Dilemma Slippery Slope Tu Quoque Straw Man

Chain game- 2 teams! You are each given a piece of paper with two sections You must make a circle chain matching up your fallacy to the previous person’s argument. First team in the correct order wins! Example: Ad Hominem I should get a merit because Jo got one! Tu Quoque If you start smoking you will end up a drug addict! You only set homework because you want us to suffer Slippery Slope Don’t believe what Andy says, he is not cool False Dilemma Straw Man You are either for us or against us!

Fallacy star signs Read the zodiac fallacy star signs and look out for the different fallacies! Name the fallacy for each sign and explain how the fallacy works in that case

Homework- make a poster! Design a poster for one of the fallacy types come up with a logo/ caption picture for that fallacy definition for that fallacy type and examples Due next lesson!
