6. Current Research 38% of 9-12 year olds have a social networking profile (20% on Facebook) Over ¼ have their profile ‘set to public’, similar in 13 – 16 year olds Over half say they don’t know how to manage settings

European 9 – 16 year olds’ use of the Internet 9% of European 9 - 10 year olds say that they have been bothered or upset by something on the Internet. 39% of European 9-16 year olds have encountered one or more risks online. Most common reported are communicating with people they haven’t met face to face or seeing potentially harmful user-generated content – much rarer for children to meet a new online contact offline or be bullied online. 41% of parents whose child has seen sexual images online say that their child has not seen this. 61% of parents whose child has met offline with an online contact say that their child has not. 5% of 9 - 16 year olds have been sent nasty or hurtful messages online. 3% say they have sent them.

Use of alternative devices to access the internet: 18% of 12 – 15s in 2009 23% in 2010 Use of mobile to access the internet: 14% in 2009 - 23% in 2010 48% of parents think their child knows more than them about the internet, rising to 70% of parents of 12 – 15s 30% of parents of 5 – 15s are concerned that their child may be giving out personal details to inappropriate people, concern grows with age of the child. This is the same for cyber-bullying.

11. SWGfL/Plymouth University Over half (56%) of respondents were aware of instances where images and videos were distributed further than the intended recipient, but only 23% believe this distribution is intended to cause upset.
