Multiplication and Division Equations SWBAT solve multiplication equations using the division property of equality; solve division equations using the multiplication property of equality
2
Related Operations How are addition and subtraction related? –They undo each other, or are inverse operations How are multiplication and division related? –They undo each other, or are inverse operations
3
Definitions Addition property of equality –When you add the same number to both sides of an equation, you get a true statement Subtraction property of equality –When you subtract the same number to both sides of an equation, you get a true statement Multiplication property of equality –When you multiply the same number to both sides of an equation, you get a true statement Division property of equality –When you divide the same number to both sides of an equation, you get a true statement
4
Write the following as an equation, using y as your variable. An object on Jupiter weights about 2.6 times its weight on Earth. If a spacecraft weighs 4914 Newtons on Jupiter, what is its weight on Earth? 2.6y = 4914 How can you determine how much it weighs on earth? –Divide to get the variable by itself
5
Examples 38x = 760 1.7c = 25.5 _b_ = 120 15 15 z ÷ 13 = 650 _x_ = 192 14 14 8b = 0.2416
6
Try the problems on your paper b = 0.0302 d = 138 d = 164.52 n = 0.25 n = 2.5 f = 147.18
