2 What is the learning zone? Here are some clues. (Let’s look for some items in our library.)

3 Meet Today’s Teacher- Librarian Promoting active learning environments Promoting literacy Providing gateways to the world through technology Planning collaboratively Preparing for resource based teaching and learning Managing the library and its collection Based on Asselin, Branch & Oberg (2003) Achieving Information Literacy: Standards for School Library Programs in Canada, CSLA & ATLC

4 Teacher-librarians wear many hats Have you thought about what the teacher librarian does?

5 Did you know that teacher- librarians:  Tell stories?  Do book talks?  Help students select books for their interest and reading level?  Model reading strategies?

6 Did you know teacher librarians  Are curriculum leaders?  Are knowledgeable about curriculum requirements?  Are constantly evaluating the collection to ensure students have access to needed resources?  Are able to gather First Nations and Metis resources?

7 And… teacher-librarians are much more:  Teachers and Teacher-Librarians meet together to discuss what is best for student achievement. Collaboration involves all members of the school team.

8 Teacher-Librarians  Provide educational leadership in the school community.  Share information and plan professional development for the whole school.  Know resources that support the curriculum and keep teachers informed.  Teach side by side with classroom teachers.  Work with advanced learners and help with differentiated instruction

9 So, what can you and the teacher-librarian do? Together, we can…

10 Problem solving  Design authentic learning experiences  Use resources to solve real world problems  Encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning
