Math Facts 2 nd graders at Longbranch are required to progress through basic math facts for both addition and subtraction through the use of math fact quizzes. 2 nd graders should be able to answer 50 questions in 3.5 minutes to move onto the next fact 2.Math.Operations & Algebraic Thinking.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.

Click on the Students- Longhorn Math, then scroll to the bottom of the page to “Summer Learning Activities- Math Fact Practice” Flash Cards Computer/ iPad/ iPhone Apps Learning Wrap-Ups ($10 at the Parent Teacher Store, www.enasco.com is cheapest online retailer)www.enasco.com

Bar Models- What? Why? There are 2 types of bar models used to assist students in solving word problems. In 2 nd grade we teach the part-part-whole and comparison bar models. See the supplemental handout for more information. 2.Math.Operations & Algebraic Thinking.1 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknown in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Games Math games that practice basic skills can be fun and engaging for young kids. Use the resources in your “Math Games” book to help your child master basic math skills There are many free iPad/iPhone apps as well as websites dedicated to math games. Everyday Math has published many iPad/iPhone apps of popular games (usually $1.99 per game)
