1. School Council Project Linked to ‘Waste Week 2014’

2. What can we do to tackle waste in the school dining room? The school council focused on areas of waste in our school.

3. We continued with our litter picks to keep our school environment clean and tidy. Year four collected 1kg of litter from the playground, our first litter pick for several months due to the bad weather!

4. Reception class recycled packaging to make their dinosaur models…Wow!

5. The biggest area for concern is the dining hall. Water bottles are being thrown away and not recycled, so a plastic recycling bin has been set up.

6. Mr Wilson was invited to our council meeting. It was suggested that waste on the floor should be swept up and weighed at the end of the week. An incentive for reducing waste is an extra play for everyone.

7. We decided to visit two local primary schools to see how they deal with waste. Grundisburgh and Bealings primary School both keep chickens, they can help to reduce food waste.

8. Fruit peelings and vegetable scraps can be fed to the chickens. We learnt all about chickens and what they like to eat and drink.

9. This chicken coupe was made locally using recycled materials. Shredded paper from the office makes good bedding material.

10. The chickens were very friendly and enjoyed all the attention. The children at Bealings school were happy to share their knowledge.

11. Rosie the Rhode Island Red is very friendly and lays delicious fresh eggs!

12. This time our Big Question is “Do you think we should keep chickens at Birchwood Primary School?”
