2 The idea behind ECCC To achieve the EU 20-20-20 targets a great number of individuals must get involved. We have created a sports-like online competition to encourage individual households to participate in energy saving. The aim is to show that it is possible to reach the targets in everyday life by a large number of European Citizens.

Results Results: 8,400 households involved in 11 countries/regions More than 20,000 European citizens involved Winner team with three times as much participants than targeted 8% heat energy saved by the winner team 4% electricity saved by the winner team 11 Energy Champions with ambitious energy saving stories Overall savings 5 % electricity and 4,7 % energy for space heating Sustainability of the campaign: Participant can use the Energy Savings Account also in future to keep on monitoring their consumption

Results Lessons learnt: Online tools and social media are effective means to involve an important number of European citizens (website, social media and the energy monitoring tool ESA) The European and the sports aspect gave an important added value to the competition Monitoring tools like ESA show the impact of the campaign in real-time and help householders to save energy by direct feedback ESA data stock provides an interesting sample of real data from European householders

Results Experiences and challenges: Use of the on-line tool Energy Saving Account needed more effort and assistance (online tutorials and workshops) To achieve sufficient data entries deep involvement via individualized mails and incentives to account holders is needed National campaigns have to anchor in regional activities and networking Prizes and incentives for participants are essential to motivate for registering and using the ESA and for energy saving
