Module 3d The Nine Hazard Classes Placards, Labels and Other Information

Ohio Department of Health Hazard Class 1 - Explosives zSubdivided into 6 divisions x1.1-Mass explosion hazard x1.2- Projectile hazard x1.3- Fire, minor blast or projectile x1.4- Minor explosion x1.5- Very insensitive explosives x1.6- Extremely insensitive

Ohio Department of Health CLASS 1- EXPLOSIVES PLACARDS

Hazard Class 2 - Gases zPressurized or Liquified yCompressed nitrogen and liquified petroleum gases (LPG) are examples zProduct and container present hazards zSubdivided into 4 divisions

Ohio Department of Health Hazard Class 2- Gases zSubdivided into 4 divisions y2.1 - Flammable gases y2.2 - Non-flammable,non- toxic*compresses gases y2.3 - Gases toxic* by inhalation y2.4 - Corrosive gases (Canada) *The word “poison” or “poisonous” are synonymous with the word “toxic”.

Ohio Department of Health CLASS 2- Gases Placards

Ohio Department of Health B L E V E zBoiling, Liquid, Expanding, Vapor, Explosion DANGER zAdded DANGER with Class 2 hazmats zBesides the chemicals, there is danger of explosion of the tank from over pressure zTanks should always be cooled zRelief valves should be allowed to vent zStay away from tank ends

Ohio Department of Health COULD THIS BLEVE? Relief valve venting Leak venting, not normal it has ignited Remember the position of the poles

Ohio Department of Health Notice the position of the fire apparatus

Ohio Department of Health Where is the fire apparatus?

Ohio Department of Health 12 firefighters died here, you can’t run fast enough!

Ohio Department of Health Hazard Class 3 Flammable/Combustible Liquids zFlammable liquids can be ignited at room temperature. zCombustible liquids require some degree of pre-heating to ignite. zNumber 1 RULE- ELIMINATE IGNITION SOURCES.

Ohio Department of Health Hazard Class 3- Flammable and Combustible Placards

Ohio Department of Health Hazard Class 4 - Flammable Solids zThree subdivisions y4.1 - Flammable solids y4.2 - Spontaneously combustible y4.3 - Dangerous when wet

Ohio Department of Health Hazard Class 4 - Placards

Ohio Department of Health Hazard Class 5 - Oxidizers and Organic Peroxides zOxidizers release oxygen to enhance or intensify burn zStrong fuels, oxidizers can create conditions which can lead to violent combustion zMany organic peroxides are very unstable

Ohio Department of Health Hazard Class 5- Oxidizers and Organic Peroxides Placards

Ohio Department of Health Hazard Class 6 - Poisonous and Infectious Substances zDivision 6.1 Toxic materials yCan include severely irritating substances y“Tear Gas”, Hydrocyanic acid, Carbon tetrachloride zDivision 6.2 Infectious Substances yPotential to cause diseases in humans yAnthrax, human blood and many body fluids

Ohio Department of Health Hazard Class 6 Placards

Ohio Department of Health INFECTOUS WASTE

Ohio Department of Health Hazard Class 7 - Radioactive Materials zThree Types: Alpha, Beta, Gamma zIonizing radiation hazard zExposure does not always result in contamination zSafety Rules: yTime, Distance and Shielding zShipped in specialized containers

Ohio Department of Health Hazard Class 7- Radioactive Placards

Ohio Department of Health Hazard Class 8 - Corrosive Materials zThose materials which can cause irreversible damage to human tissue. zIn addition, the fumes or vapors from many of the materials are also very hazardous. zExamples: nitric acid, sodium hydroxide (caustic soda or lye), hydrochloric acid.

Ohio Department of Health Hazard Class- 8 Corrosive Materials Placards

Ohio Department of Health Hazard Class 9 - Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods(ORM-D) zDivision 9.1Misc. dangerous goods. zDivision 9.2Environmentally hazardous substances. zDivision 9.3Dangerous waste.

Ohio Department of Health Hazard Class 9- Miscellaneous dangerous goods Placards Miscellaneous Not required for domestic transortation. Placard 454 kg (1,001) lbs.) or more gross weight of material which presents a hazard during the transport, but is not included in any other hazard class.

Ohio Department of Health Placard any quantity of these Enter Division Number 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 and compatibility group letter, when required. Placard any quantity Enter compatibility group letter, when required. Placard 454 kg (1,001 lbs.) Placard any quantity of Division 2.3 material. DANGEROUS WHEN WET Placard any quantity ofDivision 4.3material POISON Placard any quantity of 6.1, PGI, inhalation hazard only. Placard 454 kg (1,001 lbs.) or more or PG or II, other than PGI inhalation hazard. RADIOACTIVE Placard any quantity of packaging bearing the RADIOACTIVE III label. Certain low specific activity radioactive materials in "exclusive use" will not bear the label but RADIOACTIVE placard is required.

Ohio Department of Health Subsidiary Risk Class numbers do not appear on subsidiary risk placard Placard empty tank cars for residue of material last contained. Required background for placards on rail shipments of certain explosives and poisons. Also required for highway route-controlled quantities of radioactive materials (see §§172.507 and 172.510).

Ohio Department of Health The DANGEROUS Placard Placard 454 kg (1,001 lbs.) gross weight of two or more categories of hazardous materials listed in Table 2. A freight container, until load device, motor vehicle, or rail car which contain non-bulk packaging with two or more categories of hazardous materials that require placard specified in Table 2 may be placarded with a DANGEROUS placard instead of the separate placarding specified for each of the materials in Table 2. However, when 2.268 kg (5,000 lbs.) or more of one category of materials is loaded at one facility, the placard specified in Table 2 must be applied.

Ohio Department of Health Military Placards Many military placards are the same as UN/NA

More Military…... Some resemble UN/NA and some are completely different

More Military…... Toxic or Harmful

Ohio Department of Health Review -- Placards Etc. zThere are ________Classes of Hazmat zGreen is associated with _______________Placard zYellow is associated with Class _______________ zExplain the acronym BLEVE_____________ ____ z__________________________________ zA blue placard means what?_________________ zCorrosive Materials can do what?________________ zFlammable and Combustible liquids are in the same class, what separates one from the other?__________ zClass 2 has flammables, non flammables, poisons etc., what is the common denominator?________________
