Advertisement Techniques Quackery The promotion of unproven health products and treatments without a scientifically sound basis. What dietary supplements would fall under this category?

Why does Quackery Work? People who are too trusting, don’t question advertisements or feel overconfident People who want to be different People who feel desperate People who are vulnerable (have diseases) Fearful people

Medicines Over the Counter Drugs (OTCs) – Sold without a doctor’s prescription – Sold in regular stores Prescription Drugs – Need prescription from a doctor – Only sold in pharmacies Both – Can have side effects – Can be misused by the customer – Can have a generic brand (usually cheaper than name-brand)

Antibiotics only work against certain types of infections: – Bacterial – Fungal – Protozoal They do not work on Viruses – What is a common virus that we all probably have gotten at some point? THE FLU They do not work on Colds

Health Insurance Health Insurance – a plan in which private companies or government programs pay for part or all of a person’s medical costs; a method of prepaying for the cost of future health care.

Health Insurance Terms Premiums- Money paid to an insurance company in return for insurance benefits. Benefits- ‘covered’ health care services provided or paid for (all or part) by the insurance company.

Health Insurance Terms Deductible- the amount of money paid for covered services before the insurance company pays anything. Copayment- a flat fee paid for each health care service or office visit.

HIPAA HIPAA – A law that sets rules and limits on who can look at and receive your medical information.

Health Insurance Scenarios Step 1: Each month you earn 15 popsicle sticks. This represents your monthly income. 10 of the 15 sticks will be used for living expenses. The remaining 5 will be your “extra” money. Discuss with your group whether you would like to purchase health insurance with 3 of the 5 remaining sticks. Circle the answer your group agrees upon.

Scenario 1 You have broken your leg. You will need to go to the emergency room and have an X-ray taken. Your leg will have to be put in a cast at the hospital. Next month you will need to go back for check ups and start physical therapy. Total cost = 4 sticks

Scenario 1 Actual Cost Emergency Room visit costs around $1000. X-rays can cost anywhere from $200 to $1000 depending on the severity of the break. Doctors treatment cost anywhere from $300 to $900. Doctors visits (follow ups) cost $200 per visit. Crutches cost around $50 to $100. 8 weeks of Physical Therapy costs around $1000. Total Cost = approximately $4200

Scenario 2 You have a high fever and you’re feeling very sick. You will need to go to the doctor to find out what’s wrong. The checkup reveals you will need to take medication for two weeks to cure the illness or it will get worse. Total cost = 1 stick

Scenario 2 Actual Cost Doctor Visit- $200 2 weeks of medicine - $160 to $300 for antibiotics 3 days of sick leave/time off work unpaid - $175 and up Total Cost = $535 or more

Scenario 3 You have been in a car accident. The ambulance had to transport you to the hospital where you will need to stay for 9 days, undergoing many tests and minor surgeries before being allowed to go home. Total cost = 31 sticks

Scenario 3 Actual Cost Ambulance - $800 9 day hospital stay including doctor and nurse care, testing and medication - up to $30,000 Any follow up care will be an additional $200 per doctor visit. Total Cost = $31,200

Scenario 4 You have come down with acute appendicitis and will have to be hospitalized for 2 days after surgery. Total cost = 15 sticks

Scenario 4 Actual Cost Appendectomy and hospital charges – $15,000 Follow up doctor visit - $200 Unable to work for 2 weeks– $560 or more Total Cost = $15,760

Scenario 5 You have cut your finger and need to be rushed to the urgent care center to get stitches. You have to get 6 stitches. You will also have to go back to the doctor to have the stitches removed. Total cost = 1 stick

Scenario 5 Actual Cost Urgent Care Visit to get stitches cost around $600 Having the stitches removed by doctor- $100 Hospital or Emergency room visit would cost more. Total Cost = $700 or more

Scenario 6 You are pregnant but many complications have occurred. The doctor says you need to have an immediate cesarean (C section) to ensure the baby will be healthy. Total cost = 75 sticks

Project Directions Your Team is going to create an original product or service that could enhance someone’s health and present a commercial to sell it. Your team will assign roles for each team member (you must do this first!!)

Project Directions: Use the team sheet outline to develop your ideas. Brainstorm Specific Product Ideas (at least one item from each team mate!) Circle the one your team chooses! You will sketch a rough draft on scratch paper. You must show the rough draft & outline to the teacher before getting materials to create the final product. Today’s Goal – Create the Product!!
