 Celiac disease is a disease in the digestive system that affects the small intestine and interferes with the absorption of nutrients from food. People with this disease cannot digest gluten which is a very common ingredient in everyday foods, medicines, vitamins and lip balm. People with this disease are also prone to having other diseases such as thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes and gastrointestinal cancer.

 Celiac disease is one of the most widespread genetic disorders in the world. Scientists say that there is no direct cause of this disease, however, there is some genetic background. It is most common with people of a European decent. It is uncommon with people of an African or Asian decent.

 The body is unable to absorb nutrients from food so people with it don’t get the proper diet that they need. When people with celiac disease eat foods or use products containing gluten, their immune system responds by damaging or destroying villi, which send those nutrients to the body.

 Due to the fact that the body will be malnourished and it can’t work properly, the body is unable to treat this disease without the aid of medicine.

 The drug Remecade is used to help slow down Celiac Disease. Remicade (infliximab) reduces the effects of a substance in the body that can cause inflammation. This can also be used to help cure rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and ankylosing spondylitis.

 The only known treatment is to have a gluten-free diet to prevent damage of the small intestines. Doctors will suggest that the patient sees a nutritionist to create a diet plan. For most people, following this diet will stop symptoms, heal existing intestinal damage, and prevent further damage. Improvement usually occurs within days after the diet begins.
