1 McAuliffe Elementary Library Policies and Procedures Created by J. Nevanen

2  to provide for students, faculty, and community members an organized and accessible collection of reliable sources allowing them to become independent information seekers,  to encourage a life-long love of reading that will assist students in the pursuit of a higher education and become productive members of an educated society,  to encourage parents to become involved in their children’s reading achievement, and to foster family reading activities.

3 To provide a current collection of resources for both students and faculty that will coincide with the McAuliffe Elementary curriculum. Enhance the science curriculum by providing science lessons during library visits. Foster an appreciation for literature by providing an outlet for literary exploration through the Challenger Book Club. Teach basic library search skills through library lessons. GOALS

4  To provide access to various types information formats, such as: books, video, DVD, and computer programs which allow students to create product- driven projects.  encourage students to make proper use of the library and provide a learning experiences that actively involve students in the effective use of a wide range of print, electronic and human resources.  Create lessons that will reinforce information access skills in the library as well as in the classroom.

5  No talking while the librarian is giving instruction  Enter the library quietly.  Go to your assigned seats.  Raise your hand before speaking.  Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.  Bring only your library book and/or your folder.  Take a bathroom break before coming to the library.

6 Library Procedures CHECK-IN Procedures – As you enter the Library, place books that you wish to check-in on the circulation desk labeled CHECK-IN. CHECK-OUT Procedures – Kindergarten & 1 st grade students may check out one book. Books may be kept 2 weeks. Teachers may indicate which K and 1st students are allowed to check out two books. 2nd – 5 th grade students may check out up to three books during the 2 week circulation cycle. GT classes may check out 4 books at a time. All books are checked out for 14 days – Students may recheck a book if the book has not been reserved for another student or teacher. Reference materials and magazines are not available for check-out and must be used within the confines of the library media center. Overdue Materials – Students who have overdue materials may not check out other materials until the overdue materials are returned. There are no exceptions to this policy

7 L OST, D AMAGED, AND O VERDUE B OOKS Lost Books All lost books must be paid for in full. The cost for each book is the cost of replacement. Damaged Books Students must pay for damaged books in full. The cost for each damaged book is the cost of the replacement. Charges to Student Accounts When a student is charged for a lost or damaged book, the student may not check out any materials until the charges are cleared from the account.

8 Library Hours of Operation Library Hours: The library is opened at 7:30 AM daily. The library closes at 4:15 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and is closed at 3:30 PM the rest of the week. Walk-Ins The library media center is open for walk-ins during library hours. Students may come into the library to read quietly, take Accelerated Reader tests, or to do research. A hall pass from the classroom teacher is required in order to take advantage of this privilege. A pass is required to go to the library before school. Students must bring a library pass from the teacher from 7:30-7:45 AM to prevent being marked tardy.

9 REMEMBER: READ AND TEST EVERY DAY BECAUSE READERS ARE LEADERS!
