Longitude and Latitude Notes
Ms. Refkin’s Song “Longitude goes up and down, latitude goes all around”
2
What are coordinates of longitude and latitude? What do they tell us?
3
They are numbers that tell us the exact or absolute location of a place
4
What will the degrees of latitude tell you?
5
How far the location is north or south of the equator
6
What will the degrees of longitude tell you?
7
How far the location is east or west of the prime meridian
8
Which way do lines of latitude run?
9
East and West
10
How far apart are lines of latitude on a map?
11
15 degrees **** This will vary depending on the map. Be sure you pay attention on all maps to check how far apart the lines are
12
What is another name for a line of latitude?
13
Parallel
14
What is the line of latitude that runs east and west around the Earth, and is the starting point for measuring latitude on Earth?
15
The Equator
16
How is latitude measured from the equator?
17
North and South
18
What are the 2 areas located above and below the equator?
19
Northern and Southern Hemispheres
20
Where is the Equator located?
21
0 degrees
22
How far do the Northern and Southern hemispheres extend from the Equator?
23
0 to 90 degrees
24
Which way do lines of longitude run?
25
North and South
26
How far apart are lines of longitude on a map?
27
15 degrees *** Again- this will change depending on the map you are looking at
28
What is another name for a line of longitude?
29
Meridian
30
What is the name of the line that we start measuring longitude called
What is the name of the line that we start measuring longitude called? Where is it located?
31
The Prime Meridian located at 0 degrees
32
How is longitude measured from the Prime Meridian?
33
East and West
34
What are the areas to the east and west of the Prime Meridian called?
35
Eastern and Western Hemispheres
36
How far do the eastern and western hemispheres extended in their respective directions?
37
0 to 180 degrees
38
Some Helpful Tips When trying to find a place when given the coordinates- First look at the hemispheres
39
More Helpful Hints Think about the place you are trying to find. Trust what you know about where that place is. Draw a compass Look for the hemispheres Look at which way the lines are increasing/decreasing Look at how far apart the lines are spaced on your map Use your finger to track the points and find where they intersect
