3 Degree Programs  Generic-4 semesters (2 years)  LVN to RN-2 semesters (1 year)

4 Generic Program New cohort accepted each semester  Fall – 30-36 students  Spring – 30-36 students Currently a Monday – Saturday commitment but students must be flexible. Schedules vary and classes may be morning, afternoon or evening. Full time commitment!

5 LVN-RN Step Up Students enter in the third semester of the Generic Program. Number of available spaces varies –. LVN–RN Step Up is not subject to the generic application procedure. There is a separate LVN-RN Application with preadmission requirements.

6 Admission Criteria for the Generic Nursing Program

7 Multi Criteria Used in Application Procedure  Previous U.S. degrees  GPA in Sciences & GE Coursework  Proficiency in 2 nd language  TEAS

8 Additional Multi Criteria Points  Allied Health Professions  Life Experience  Volunteer hours in the health care field (100 hrs. minimum within 3 years)

9 Application Dates Generic Program July 20-August 14 Spring entrance January 12-February 13 Fall entrance Can reapply, if not accepted.

10 Admission Criteria for the LVN -RN Nursing Program

11 Application Dates LVN-RN Step Up January 2 – March 1 Accepted applicants to the Nursing Program are based on a space available basis and are notified in April.

12 Prerequisites for Generic & LVN-RN  High School Graduation, Equivalency (GED) or higher degree  Students must submit an unofficial copy of High School Diploma, high school transcript, GED certificate or transcript showing higher degree

13 Previous Degree SB-1393 If a student has a Baccalaureate or higher degree from accredited U.S. Institution, they are exempt from support or Gen Ed course work.

14 Prerequisites Math Competency  Intermediate Algebra or any higher Math (college level)  Palomar College - Math 56, 60 or higher Math

15 Prerequisites Science Courses  Human Anatomy – 10 years  Human Physiology – 7 years  Microbiology – 7 years Minimum 2.5 GPA required

16 Prerequisites for LVN Step Up Program Same as Generic plus the following:  Nursing 110 (offered Fall semester only)  Copy of current CA LVN license Note: If you did not graduate from a regionally accredited LVN program and desire the degree….See me for information regarding your options after the presentation.

17 Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)  Diagnostic test that covers Math, English, Reading & Science.  The first score on the TEAS exam will be used for the application. Strongly recommend accessing resources on our website to prepare for the test.  Applicants must have a minimum cumulative score of 62%.  If below 62%, the TEAS exam can be repeated once after remediation than the second score is used for the application.  You must have a Palomar College student ID to take the test.

18 Associate in Arts or Associate in Science Nursing Curriculum is identical. Students must declare a degree plan immediately after admission into the Nursing Program. Both are transferable to four-year universities.

19 General Education Requirements for AS & AA Degrees  Psychology  Sociology  Speech  English Composition  Humanities

20 Additional Requirements for AA Degree  American History & Institutions (6 units) Health Education and Multicultural requirements are waived for the AA & AS degree in Nursing. (they are included in our nursing curriculum)

21 Application Process Application Packet must be complete. Incomplete packets will not be processed.  Application & required checklist  Proof of high school graduation or higher degree  Unofficial transcripts supporting all coursework completed toward the AA or AS degree in Nursing  TEAS score –unofficial when applying & official when accepted (submit all TEAS results)  Support documents as listed on application for additional point awards

22 Nursing Curriculum Palomar College Nursing Program has state and national accreditations: The California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) and Accreditation Commission in Nursing Education (ACEN).  Nursing 117 & 103  Nursing 118 & 203  Nursing 217 (LVNs enter)  Nursing 218

23 Background Check All incoming nursing students are subject to a background check. Includes but not limited to the following:  Seven years residence/background history  SSN Trace  OIG/GSA-Medicare fraud  Nationwide Sex Offender Registry  10-Panel Drug Screen

24 Legal Status Requirement  Clinical sites mandate that nursing students must be a legal resident.  The BRN requires a SSN before graduates can sit for the NCLEX exam.  Legal residents without a SSN can begin the Nursing Program but may not be accepted by a clinical site and therefore not be able to continue in the Nursing Program.
