Elements, Compounds, or Mixtures???
2
Matter What is Matter? What are examples of matter? What is NOT matter? Anything that has mass and takes up space. People, atoms, chairs, food,…etc. Emotions, Energy
3
Atom A unit of Matter, the smallest unit of an element having all the characteristics of that element Contains Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons
4
Element A Pure substane containing only one kind of ATOM Examples: Lithium (Li), Calcium (Ca), Oxygen (O)
5
Compound A pure substance containing two or more DIFFERENT kinds of atoms CHEMICALLY COMBINED Examples: Sodium Chloride (Table Salt)
6
Mixture Two or more elements or compounds not chemically combined Examples: Pop, Cereal, Salad, Salt Water
7
Heterogeneous Mixture A non uniform mixture Examples: Raisin Bran, Fruit Salad, Sand
8
Homogeneous Mixture A uniform mixture, also called a solution Examples: Salt Water, Apple Juice
9
Pure Substance Substance with the same composition throughout and the same set of properties Elements, or Compounds H 2 O, S 8, O 2, H 2
10
Molecule The smallest particle of a substance that retains the chemical and physical properties of the substance and is composed of two or more atoms
