1 Department of Natural resources and Environment
USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES FOR ENERGY GENERATION IN HOTELS IN CRETE John Vourdoubas TEI of CRETE Department of Natural resources and Environment

2 Renewable energy sources currently find various applications in hotels in Crete , for the generation of electricity, heating and cooling Renewable Energy sources which are mainly used include Solar Energy Solid biomass Geothermal Energy

3 Solar Energy is extensively used for hot water production for various uses. Flat plate collectors are mainly used, placed on the terrace of the hotel, either in thermosiphonic or in forced circulation systems.

4 FLAT PLATE COLLECTORS IN THE HOTEL CANDIA MARIS FOR HOT WATER PRODUCTION

5 Solar Energy is also used for space cooling
Solar Energy is also used for space cooling. Flat plate collectors are also used, and the produced hot water at OC, is used with absorbtion systems for space cooling in the hotel.

6 SOLAR COOLING SYSTEM WITH ABSORBTION COOLING IN HOTEL LENTZAKIS

7 Solar Energy is used with PV panels for electricity generation
Solar Energy is used with PV panels for electricity generation. The generated power can be either sent to the grid or can cover power needs of the hotel, with or without storage in batteries.

8 PV PANELS IN THE TERRACE OF A HOTEL

9 Solid biomass is also used for space heating in hotels
Solid biomass is also used for space heating in hotels. Olive kernel wood consists a cheap local raw material and is currently used in various hotels for space heating and hot water production.

10 SOLID BIOMASS BURNER IN HOTEL ATRION

11 WOOD IS USED FOR SPACE HEATING IN AGROTOURISM FACILITY IN MILIA

12 Low enthalpy geothermal energy can be used heating or cooling purposes with heat pumps. Heat pumps are very efficient devices with COP 3.5-4, and they can cover all the heating and cooling needs of the hotel.

13 PRINCIPLE OF GEOTHERMAL HEAT PUMPS

14 Passive cooling systems like planted roofs have been also used in Cretan hotels for lowering the heating and cooling needs of them.

15 PLANTED ROOF IN HOTEL EL GRECO

16 TABLE 1 Characteristics of RES used in Cretan hotels
Energy source Energy produced Reliability of technology Financial Attractiveness 1. Solar Heat High Very good 2. Solar Cooling Moderate 3. Solar Electricity 4. Solid biomass 5.Geother-mal heat pumps Heat and cooling 6. Passive cooling

17 TABLE 2 AVAILABILITY OF FINANCIAL TOOLS FOR RES INVESTMENTS IN CRETAN HOTELS
Own capital YES Bank loan State capital subsidies Third party financing NO Feed-in tariffs

18 The possibility of recycling the fried vegetable oils from the hotel restaurants exists in Crete to day. There are various companies in Crete which pick up the fried oils from the restaurants and send them in factories in continental Greece, for processing them and producing biodiesel

19 FRIED VEGETABLE OILS FROM HOTEL RESTAURANTS CAN BE USED FOR BIODIESEL PRODUCTION

20 - The energy cost represents the 3-9% of the running cost in hotels
- The energy cost represents the 3-9% of the running cost in hotels. -The average energy consumption in hotels in Greece is KWH/M2 year - The energy consumption in a hotel in various sectors is a) Space heating % b) Space cooling % c) Hot water production % d) Lighting % e) Kitchen-Laundry % f) Other % TOTAL %

21 The use of RES in hotels in Crete , will lower the CO2 emissions from them. It is foreseen that at least 20% of the energy consumed currently in Cretan hotels and produced by fossil fuels can be generated from RES.

22 The increase of use of RES in hotels in Crete will:
Increase the capital investments in sustainable energy technologies. Create new jobs , since many of those systems can be manufactured, installed and maintained locally. Decrease the use of oil and electricity generated by oil. Decrease the CO2 emissions from the hotel sector. Decrease the necessery installed power of the thermoelectric plants to cover the power needs in the island. Decrease the currency used to import the oil from abroad.

23 THANK YOU FOR YOUR KIND ATTENTION JOHN VOURDOUBAS TEI OF CRETE
