Developing a strategy for quality Ira Revels Digital Project Manager Cornell University Library

Session Goal Workshop participants will be able to assess image quality and implement a strategy for quality control assessment.

Session Objectives  Overview the Factors involving image quality control  Review Tasks and Methods for assessing image and metadata quality  Demonstrate image/metadata quality control methods  Pair Exercise

Learner Outcomes  Be able to Recognize image quality control factors  Understand and apply tasks and methods in the assessment of image quality  Perform QC calibration methods on equipment and using QC Assessment survey guidelines

Overview of QC Factors  Factors involved in achieving image and metadata quality Strategy based on project goals Reference point Scope and methods of your quality review QC environment System performance Codify your procedures 8/8/2015Digital Imaging Workshop 5

QC Inspection Tasks & problems  Image Capture Halftones ○ Moiré patterns Grayscale images ○ Contrast enhancement ○ Histogram Equalization ○ Threshold (loss of distinct lines) Poor image quality ○ Uneven lighting, distortion, out of focus ○ Skew Missing/duplicated pages ○ Human operator error

QC Inspection Tasks & problems  Text Recognition Positioning ○ Orientation Segmentation ○ Incorrect region types or ranges  Metadata Incorrect metadata Improper use of element standard

Quality Assessment Methods  Image capture > manual correction through software  Poor image quality > manual calibration, auto-sharpen, auto de-screen filter, manual cropping, enhancement through software  Incorrect image segmentation > manual correction through software  Incorrect metadata > manual correction and find & replace (automated) correction through software

Metadata Quality Assessment  Automated correction can apply to the following tasks: Incorrect entry > find and replace  Manual correction can apply to the following tasks: Metadata entry using Dublin Core Misinterpretation of element standards Incorrect file naming
