2 Depression in the Cities Loss of Jobs Shantytowns Soup Kitchens and Breadlines African Americans and Latinos faced extra hardships

3 Depression in Rural Areas Some farmers found hope in that they could still feed their families Farmers lost land  Falling prices led to rising debt Farmers faced foreclosures  Tenant farming The Dust Bowl  Drought that began in the early 1930’s  Farmers migrated to Pacific Coast States in search of work

4 Effects on the American Family For some, family was a source of strength Families entertained themselves at home  Played board games (monopoly invented in 1933)  Listened to the radio Depression put strain on many families and they broke apart because of the strain

5 Men Looked for work  This went on for years  Some stopped trying Abandoned their families No direct relief at the start of the depression  $2.39 a week offered in New York

6 Women and Children Women  Canned food  Sewed clothes  Managed the budget  Some had jobs Children  Health problems  Schools closed  “Wild Boys”

7 Social and Psychological Effects Some lost their will to survive Suicide rate went up More admitted to mental hospitals People had to make Sacrifices that effect the rest of their lives  Stopped visiting the doctor  No school plans  Put off having a family Many people showed kindness to those in need
