Welcome Team Captains!!!! “The American Caner society is the nationwide community- based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.”

On-Site Activity Options:: The icing on the cake You can host a fundraiser to both raise a little extra money and to contribute to a fun atmosphere- bonus points if it’s related to advocacy hours Some Ideas: food (shaved ice, barbeque, baked goods, beverages [make it pink and it’s breast cancer themed!]), crafts (sell a bead for each lap [fitness], have a picture frame painting stand, remembrance ribbons [survivor], decorate shoe laces [fitness]), raffles, massages, sunscreen [skin cancer]-- you can choose nearly anything! Or you can opt to run an activity themed to the advocacy hours! Some Ideas: Pop the polyp balloon stomp or water balloon fight [Colon cancer], Sports tournaments [Fitness], Jazzercise-Jane Fonda style! [Fitness], Sunscreen rubbing contest [Skin Cancer], Fruit eating contest [Nutrition], Saltine whistling contest [Lung Cancer], Sign people up for ACS CAN [Advocacy], Three legged race [Fitness], Race around the track breathing only through a straw [Tobacco/Lung Cancer], Stomp out cigarettes DDR tournament [Tobacco/Lung Cancer], Tour de France tricycle race [Prostate cancer], Letter writing campaign to support the oncology patients at the UCLA Medical Center [Survivor], Bobbing for apples [Breast Cancer], Hula Hoop Contest [Fitness], Midnight starbathing [Skin Cancer], Sunscreen art [Skin Cancer]

Survivorship Each team should work on creating a survivor basket. It doesn’t have to be super huge- we just want to be able to give each survivor something at the end of the survivor lap and opening ceremonies. It’s super easy too- just ask each person on your team to donate an item/a pair of people to donate an item if you have a larger team! Some ideas include but certainly aren’t limited to!: Spa : lotions, soaps, all that yummy smelling stuff from Bath and Body, fluffy towels, face mask gunk, candles, the works Chocolate: it’s pretty self explanatory, and there’s a fudge shop across from Diddy. Movie Night in a Box: Include something like movie vouchers, a recent release, or a gift card to Best Buy to let them pick out a movie of their own. Throw in a few bags of microwave popcorn, some Red Vines, a couple cans of soda, whatever you think is necessary to complete the movie experience. Make the “basket” a popcorn bowl for brownie points Book: a gift card to Barnes and Noble/Borders/Amazon.com, throw in any applicable Dr. Seuss or Shel Silverstein for a trip back to their childhood, Gardening: seeds, those little garden utensils, a decorated plastic pot, watering can, bamboo for luck, a foam knee pad Beach: Just make sure you put in a bottle of sunscreen!!! Beach towel, visor, silly magazine to flip through, bottled water, all wrapped up in a plastic beach pail Sports: We are the home of the Bruin Basketball team. Enough said? Cookies: How many different cookie recipes do you know? Coffee: A mug, a Starbucks/Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf gift certificate, flavored cream or sweetener, some coffee beans. And hot chocolate or tea for when they’re already on caffeine overload! Visit this website for more: http://www.homemade-gift-basket-ideas.com/gift-basket- themes.html

Advocacy Help fund the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) Phillip Morris has dropped future tobacco research here at UCLA! We’re no longer stuck doing their dirty work once the initial grant is up!

Luminaria Bags are lit at night to guide the way during the remembrance laps, and you can personalize, decorate, and keep them as a Relay memento Bags will be for sale at the event for $5, but can also be pre- purchased via flyers Different bags are available to remember pets who have battled cancer as well For the ceremony slide show please email rbeckman@ucla.edu with your (and your teammates!) answer to the question: “Why do you Relay?”rbeckman@ucla.edu This can be a picture, special memory, a reason why you relay, or any combination of the three!

Team Captain Fund Folders

As a reminder We need to order shirts at the end of THIS WEEK! Get your team members signed up so they can have an event shirt Fundraise, fundraise, fundraise! Last year we raised over $130,000– this year our goal is $150,000. UC Davis is always the top CA event, and we’d like to dethrone them. We currently have $11,239.77 raised, and 45 more days to reach our goal! To put it all in perspective: There are (currently) 105 teams. If each team has 15 members, that’s 1,575 participants… and if each of them raises the suggested $100, we’ll surpass our goal, with $157,500– that’s entirely doable!
