So, who are we talking about? Our kids? You and me?

Why should we move? Lots of Benefits! Yet, THEY AREN’T! KIDS? Improves strength and endurance Builds healthy bones and muscles Helps control weight Reduce anxiety and stress Increases self-esteem, and may improve blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Improve academic performance In 2013, 27.1% of high school students surveyed had participated in at least 60 minutes per day of physical activity on all 7 days before the survey Only 29% attended physical education class daily.

Why should we move? Lots of Benefits! Yet, WE AREN’T! ADULTS? It can help: Control your weight Reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease Reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome Reduce your risk of some cancers Strengthen your bones and muscles Improve your mental health and mood Improve your ability to do daily activities and prevent falls, if you're an older adult Increase your chances of living longer Less than half (48%) of all adults MEET minimum recommendations: non-Hispanic white adults (22.8%), non-Hispanic black adults (17.3%) and Hispanic adults (14.4%).

Play and Movement Education Successful pre-school movers more active adults. Challenges to being a mover? Childhood obesity 17% 2-19 years are obese, higher in Latino and African American children Lack of PE instruction in pre-school and K-12 Lack of movement opportunities PLAY?! How many of you went out to play after school or on the weekends and didn’t get in trouble unless you were late for dinner? How many of you let YOUR kids do this?

Tandon et al.: Pediatrics, 2015. Active Play Opportunities at Child Care Children’s activity was 73% sedentary, 13% light, and 14% Moderate Vigorous PA. For 88% of time children did not have Active Play Opportunities (APO) The most frequent APO was outdoor free play (8% of time); outdoor teacher-led time was <1%. PRE-SCHOOL KIDS: What is so important that there is so little time to play?

Researchers found: Park use not associated with socioeconomic status, surrounding neighborhood's condition, or perceptions of safety. The presence of organized and supervised activities: strongest predictor of park use and physical activity. Policymakers should focus on increasing the demand for and use of existing parks. Increased park programming could help boost physical activity in both high- and low-poverty areas.

Think falls reduction risk, reduction of type 2 diabetes risk... More people at other times than when 100 Citizens is running!!

Upcoming expansion CDC REACH grant to collaborate with Community Coalitions and LA Co Dept. of Public Health to initiate two 100 Citizens Programs in parks in South LA. CSU Expansion with target of 21 CSUs having 100 Citizens in their neighborhood park by Fall 2016 … likely 5 by this Fall 2015.
