8 Injury Facts Ü Leading cause of death & disability among children ages 14 & under in U.S. Ü 1/2 of these deaths occur to children ages 4 & under. Ü 1 in 4 (25%) children require medical attention each year for injuries. Ü Estimated that 9 out of 10 injuries can be prevented. T4-1

9 Common & Serious Injuries to Children : Falls : Burns : Poisonings : Motor vehicle crashes : Pedestrian-motor vehicle crashes : Drowning : Choking T5-1

10 Children are Vulnerable to Injury because: Heads are larger in proportion to their bodies Internal organs are not mature Large body surface area for their size Small fingers Small airways Immature swallowing mechanism Bones are still growing T6-1

11 Children are Vulnerable to Injury because they: Are natural explorers of their environment. May not understand the word “NO”. Are fearless. Put things in their mouths. Can’t judge speed & direction of sound. Lack balance & coordination. Imitate adult behaviors. T7-1

16 Change the Behavior Learn about the injury risks at each stage of a child’s development so that you can prevent injuries from occurring. T12-1

18 Injury Triangle Example What factors contributed to this injury? Think of the behavior, environment & injury causing agent. What could have been done to possibly prevent the injury? What are some of the barriers to changing the corners of the triangle? What strategies would be best for this situation? T14-1

19 Why talk about abuse & neglect in this course? They can cause injury and illness to children. They occur often enough that most will see these problems at some time. Under Ohio law, child day care providers are required to report them -EVEN if it’s just suspected. T15-1

20 Recognizing Abuse 4 Accept that it happens! 4 Train yourself to ask: “Could this be abuse?” whenever a child has an unusual or suspicious injury. 4 Learn the warning signs. T16-1

21 Steps to Take  Report the abuse/neglect to the Children’s Service Agency in your county. It is your legal responsibility to report - even if you just suspect!  Become familiar with how to assist a child who discloses abuse. T17-1

22 Completing the Incident Form 4 Fill out soon after incident so details will be fresh. 4 Be specific. Include factual detail. 4 Be objective. Give the facts, not your opinion. 4 Write clearly. 4 Give a copy to the child’s parent and keep a copy on file. T18-1

23 Suggestions Use the “Safety Checklist” to scan for hazards as you clean. Rotate roles with staff each week. Use injury prevention activities with children. Organize a safety event that includes one of the day care rules. T19-1
