5 Infectious Disease Vocab 17 1. Infectious Disease – disease caused by the presence of a living thing in the body. 2. Pathogen – a microbe that causes disease in an organism 3. Carrier – a PERSON with a disease that they can pass on to other organisms 4. Vector – an ANIMAL or INSECT that carries and transmits a disease 5. Vaccine – substance entered in the body to produce immunity (prevent getting sick) 6. Antibiotic – medicines used to kill or slow growth in bacteria that cause disease 7. Anti viral- Medicines used to treat a virus once a person is sick but must be given with a few days of exposure. 8. Epidemic – illness or health-related issue that is showing up in more cases than would normally be expected. (Ex: Malaria) 9. Pandemic – wide spread (usually worldwide) outbreak of an infectious disease (Ex: Influenza)

7 Think about it…. Fill in the bubbles with 8 people you have come in contact with today (even if only a handshake). Think about how many possible people each person has also come in contact with.

8 In this lab activity, you will simulate the spread of an undiagnosed virus through your class. At first, only one person in the class will be infected with the virus. That person, the “index case, ” will be unaware that he or she is infected, which is often the case in reality. You will be given a cup containing a clear fluid that will represent your body fluid. You will exchange your body fluid with three other people in the class. At the end of the activity, you will test your simulated fluid for the presence of the virus and identify the original infected person, “patient zero.” In this lab activity, you will simulate the spread of an undiagnosed virus through your class.
