To popularize the war, the government set up the nation’s first propaganda agency, the Committee on Public Information (CPI). Propaganda is biased communication designed to influence people’s thoughts and actions.

1915 – U.S. Army not ready for war – Army of 80,000 men – Lacked equipment & resources President Wilson calls for more troops and $$$$$$ for military

Selective Service Act – 1 st time U.S. government had to establish a draft before entering a war – All men 21-30yrs old required Food Administration set up to conserve food & Victory Gardens were grown

War Financing – Raised 1/3 of the money needed through taxes – Sold Liberty Loans & Victory Bonds War Industries Board created to increase (standardize) production & efficiency Women went to work in the factories

Committee on Public Information created by muckraking journalist George Creel – Used propaganda (biased communication) to gain support Increased hatred among ethnic groups!!!
