Background Information Atari Inc. was founded in June 28 th 1972. Designed and built one the first video games, following Magnavox's Odyssey. Also worked making computers and hardware for personal computers. Its name came from a Japanese verb Ataru meaning to hit the target.

First Console First game was a released in 1976. It was a tennis style game named pong. Featured color, sound from built in speakers, and sturdy controllers. Many knock offs were made, but Atari was well known and therefore sales stayed positive.

First Games The first console to introduce interchangeable games was the Atari 2600. The most popular games were: Pacman Pitfall Kaboom Space Invaders Missile Command

Breakthroughs One of the first games that could be played on any TV in your home. Produced some of the first personal computers despite lack of sales. The first console to be popular both in America and other countries.

Most Popular Console The most popular console was the Atari Video Computer System 2600 Introduced in 1977. The original price was $199 with a total of 9 games available. By this time competition had become fierce and sales were dropping. Despite lower sales more games were added to the growing library.

What does Atari do Today? Today Atari makes only games, for a wide variety of consoles. Atari has been bought out by many different designing companies. Atari's consoles are today considered to be collectable and expensive.
