Strong Schools, Strong Pueblo We’re on the move… Preparing every student for success USDA “Smart Snacks” in Pueblo City Schools Begin Here Is the Food sold to students? Smart Snack Rule does not apply. Can the item be consumed at school midnight – 30 minutes after school is dismissed? To be allowable for sale, a food item must first meet one of the following general standards: Be a whole grain-rich 1 grain product, orwhole grain-rich The first ingredient is either a fruit, vegetable, dairy, or protein food, or Be a combination food 2 that contains at least ¼ cup fruit or vegetable, orcombination food Contains 10% DV for calcium, potassium, vitamin D, or dietary fiber. Then, ensure the food(s) as packaged and sold (Note: A “package” could be multiple servings) meet the nutritional criteria for all of these nutrients: Yes No Total fat (≤ 35% of calories from total fat) Saturated fat (<10% of calories from saturated fat) Trans fat (0 grams of trans fat) Sodium Snack items: ≤ 230 mg Entrée items: ≤ 480 mg Sugar ≤35 % weight from total sugars in foods Calories: Snack Items: ≤ 200 calories Entrée Items: ≤ 350 calories No food or beverage sales outside of the school meal program may occur during the period ½ hour before until ½ hour after each meal service. 5 (Colorado Competitive Food Service Policy) DOCUMENT See Page 4-5 for requirements Is the food sold through a pre-order and consumed off campus? ACOUNTABILITY Verification through internal, CDE, or USDA confirmation that Federal and State laws (Steps 1-3) are implemented at schools. Smart Snacks documentation for food and beverage items must include: Nutrition Facts Label Ingredients List For every food or beverage item sold during a non-exempt event. 2. Maintain a log of ALL food sales outside of the Federal school meal program. (Example on Page 5) Documentation of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation Calculator results is optional, however you must also maintain nutrition facts labels and ingredient lists as this is required for all Food and Beverage sales.

This includes all food and beverage sales outside of the Federal school meal programs. Strong Schools, Strong Pueblo We’re on the move… Preparing every student for success No food or beverage sales outside of the school meal program may occur during the period ½ hour before until ½ hour after each meal service. 5 (Colorado Competitive Food Service Policy) Notes: 1.Whole grain-rich – Foods that contain 100-percent whole grain or contain a blend of whole- grain meal and/or flour and enriched meal and/or flour of which at least 50-percent is whole grain. Whole grain-rich products must contain at least 50-percent whole-grains and the remaining grain, if any, must be enriched. 2.Combination food – Products containing two or more components representing two or more of the recommended food groups: fruit, vegetable, dairy, protein or grains. 3.Other beverages* (i.e., unsweetened or diet teas, low calorie sport drinks, fitness waters, flavored waters, seltzers, and coffees) Other flavored and/or carbonated beverages that are ≤20 ounces must: Contain ≤5 calorie per 8 ounces or ≤10 calories per 20 ounces Other flavored and/or carbonated beverages that are ≤12 ounces must: Contain ≤40 calories per 8 ounces or ≤60 calories per 12 ounces Diet soda is prohibited Caffeinated beverages are allowed *At least 50% of non-milk beverage options must be water and no or low-calorie options. 4. Smart Snacks Federal requirement. 5. High Schools may sell “mechanically vended” beverages which meet Colorado Healthy Beverage Law requirements during this time period.
