Equipment/Software Project #2 John Cosgrove HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION WEIGHT TRAINING
2
GOAL My overall goal is to be able to teach a unit on weight training/cardio exercise and for my students to be able to learn and perform various exercises using weight training/cardio equipment. I believe that becoming educated on weight training and cardio exercise and understanding how the body works, different movement patterns, etc. can be very beneficial to my students as adolescents. Not only do I hope to teach my students how to weight train and different cardio exercises but through learning these important foundations of exercise I may be able to instill some notion of lifelong fitness within them, which is my overall goal as a health educator. But, in order to achieve this some equipment is necessary. What I will need is as follows:
3
FOLDING BENCH As basic as the bench may seem it is a HUGE piece of equipment to have in a gym, almost a must for weight training. A benches main function is to support someone during an exercise. This is why it is so important because it can allow for an variety of different exercises to be performed. Almost every muscle group can be exercised in some way using a bench. The added “folding” ability allows for different variations of exercises to be performed at varying planes allowing for even more variety in exercises.

UNIVERSAL UB300 FLAT/INCLINE/DECLINE BENCH Cost: $95.04 x 2 = $190.08 Found at - http://www.walmart.com/ip/Universal-UB300-Flat-Incline-Decline- Bench/13447986

DUMBBELL RACK A dumbbell rack is also a very key component to any functional gym. The weights wouldn’t have to be too heavy, maybe dumbbells ranging from 5-40 or 50 pounds going up in increments of 5. A dumbbell can be used to perform a much larger array of exercises than a barbell can offer. Students can perform anything from basic weight training exercises to advanced ones (considering they have pervious knowledge) and even cardio exercises with light weight dumbbells.

THE BODY SOLID (SDS550) GREY HEX DUMBELL SET 5 - 50 LB PAIRS Cost: $676.50 Found at - http://www.sears.com/body-solid-fitness-the-body-solid-sds550-grey/p- SPM7596186702?prdNo=4&blockNo=4&blockType=G4

TREADMILL Cardio can be done with many weight-bearing exercises and not much equipment but a treadmill is a great piece to have. I find a treadmill much more beneficial than an elliptical or stationary bike as it allows the students to get up and moving more. Running on a treadmill is a natural motion versus an elliptical and will also help them to stay on track. Whereas an elliptical you can slack off somewhat, you have to stay on pace and on track on a treadmill. The treadmill I am looking at offers much more than any regular treadmill. Fitness software is actually built into the treadmill but I will go into further detail on the next slide.

NORDICTRACK COMMERCIAL 2450 Cost: $1,999.00 Found at - http://www.nordictrack.com/fitness/en/NordicTrack/Treadmills/commercial- 2450-treadmill

IFIT Description from website - iFit® is a fitness platform that connects you and your NordicTrack machine to online, interactive training tools that track your fitness, plan your workouts and adapt to your progress. With iFit®, you're also part of a supportive community that helps you accomplish all your fitness goals. This is a great application that students would absolutely love to try. It’s easily accessible right from the treadmill if WiFi is available. Also, all the information is stored using Cloud. One of the coolest features of this treadmill is the ability to workout wherever you want. You can literally draw a workout using Google Maps anywhere in the world. A video simulation will appear and inclines and declines of this place will take affect as it would in real life! Truly an amazing piece of technology.

IFIT MODULE (YEARLY SUBSCRIPTION) Cost: $99.00 (recurring annually) Found at - http://www.nordictrack.com/fitness/en/NordicTrack/iFit/ifit-module-with-yearly- subscription

PULL-UP BAR Lastly, a pull-up bar would complete this gym nicely. Pull-up bars are great for bodyweight exercises and the essence of the pull-up or chin-up is very deeply rooted in building upper body strength. I can also assess students strength by the amount they can do and have them set goals to achieve higher numbers.

ENDING REMARKS In conclusion, I believe this equipment/software package would reap huge benefits for my students. Weight training and cardio exercise is the foundation for living an active, healthy lifestyle. With these tools I believe I can help my students grow not only muscularly but as active individuals. Total Cost: $3353.58 Lets help to build a more active, stronger generation.
