DOT Special Provisions 188 &189
188 Exceptions for Small Quantities Li-ion cells -1.5g ELC (approx. equivalent ~ 20 Wh) ELC (Equivalent lithium content ) means, for a lithium-ion cell, the product of the rated capacity, in ampere-hours, of a lithium-ion cell times 0.3, with the result expressed in grams. The equivalent lithium content of a battery equals the sum of the grams of equivalent lithium content contained in the component cells of the battery. The calculation used to determine lithium content is: Ah per cell x 0.3 gm x number of cells • It requires about 0.3 grams of lithium metal to produce 1 ampere hour of power. Example, if the battery you wish to ship is rated at 5,300 mAh per cell and contains 8 cells: • Divide 5,300 mAh by 1,000 to get the rating in ampere hours: 5,300 mAh ÷ 1,000 = 5.3 Ah • Multiply the Ah by 0.3 gm to determine the amount of lithium in each cell: 5.3 x 0.3 gm = 1.59 grams of lithium in each cell Multiply the amount of lithium in each cell by the number of cells in each battery: 1.59 grams/cell x 8 = grams of lithium in the battery 189 Exceptions to Medium Lithium Cells & Batteries
21

Scenario 1 Let’s ship 4 Lithium ion batteries UN3480 (512 Wh) packed individually in UN tested 4G fiberboard boxes. Net weight of each battery is 7 kg. Packaging? What is the maximum quantity per approved package allowed? Passenger or Cargo Aircraft Only? 7 kg 7 kg 7 kg 7 kg The calculation used to determine watt hours is: Volts x ampere hour (Ah) = watt hours Example, if the battery you wish to ship is rated at 3.7 volts and mAh per cell: Since many batteries have a low ampere hour rating, they are rated in milliamperes per hour (mAh), one thousandth of an ampere hour (Ah). • Since a milliampere hour is one thousandth of an ampere hour, divide 42,000 mAh by 1,000 to get ampere hours (Ah). 42,000 mAh ÷ 1,000 = 42 ampere hours To determine the watt hours in this battery, multiply volts by 42 ampere hours: 3.7 V x 42 Ah = 155 Wh
