Isaac Asimov Ricardo Viçoso nº19 Simão Pereira nº21 Subject: English Teacher: Cristina Alcobia Blind Date with a short story

Asimov was born October 4, 1919 and January 2, 1920 in Petrovichi Petrovichi, was in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. His exact date of birth is somewhat uncertain, but Asimov himself celebrated it on January 2.

His family immigrated to the United States when he was three years old. His parents always spoke Yiddish and English with him, he never learned Russian. Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, Asimov taught himself to read at the age of five.

Around the age of 11, he began to write his own stories, and by age 19 he was selling stories to the science fiction magazines. John W. Campbell, his editor, became a personal friend. His father forbade him of reading the pulps, as he considered them to be trash, but Asimov persuaded him that it had "Science" in the title, so they were educational. Asimov began reading science fiction magazines at a young age.

Asimov joined the faculty of the Boston University School of Medicine, with which he remained associated after finishing his studies. From 1958 on he turned to writing full-time. In September 1941, Astounding published the 32nd story Asimov wrote, "Nightfall", which has been described as one of "the most famous science- fiction stories of all time". In 1968 "Nightfall" was nominated the best science fiction short story ever written. In his short story collection Nightfall and Other Stories, he wrote “Star Light” which we are reading. He said" I was suddenly taken seriously and the world of science fiction became aware that I existed. As the years passed, in fact, it became evident that I had written a 'classic'.”
