Grandparents’ Day Breakfast 2012 Mathematics

Today’s students are expected to solve tomorrow’s problems. Our goal: To teach St. Francis students to be 21 st century problem solvers which includes mastering: *Technological skills *Critical thinking skills *Collaborative problem solving skills

Primary School Concept of numbers Counting Discovering patterns Reproducing patterns

Primary School Recognizing and naming shapes

Primary School Developing vocabulary to describe numbers and shapes Developing vocabulary to designate order (before, after, etc.)

Primary School Comparing sizes Completing puzzles (matching, orientation)

First Grade: Our goal is to help students realize that math is part of daily life while they: Learn critical problem- solving skills; Focus on rapid recognition of addition and subtraction facts; Lower School

First Grade (con’t): Identify, extend and create various types of patterns; Develop a strong sense of number relationships; Apply skills in place value, geometry, measurement, time, money. Lower School

Second Grade Addition and subtraction facts to 18; Single and multi-step word problems; Problem solving strategies; Place value to 1,000, regrouping; Identifying geometrical shapes; Solving problems involving measurement; Lower School

Second Grade (con’t) Telling time; Recording different money amounts; and Introduction to multiplication and division. Lower School

Third Grade Problem solving Creating and reading data on graphs Fractions! Geometry Multiplication facts Division facts Lower School

Fourth Grade Fractions and Decimals (comparing, ordering, rounding, operations) Multiplying 4-digit numbers Long division Geometry (angles, 3-D solids, transformations) Measurement Probability and Statistics Lower School

Fifth Grade Advanced work with Fractions and Decimals (comparing, ordering, rounding, operations) Multiplying 4-digit numbers Scientific Notation Patterns, relations, functions Introduce Algebraic Expressions “Pi Day” Celebration Middle School

6 th grade Pre-Algebra Utilizing iPads to enhance instruction Working collaboratively to solve problems Proportionality Plane Geometry Probability and statistics/graphs Middle School

7 th grade Introductory Algebra I Making leap from concrete to abstract Linear equations 3 dimensional geometry Basic Stock Market understanding Project Based Learning: “What will $100,000,000 do to help the relief effort in Haiti?” Middle School

8 th grade Intermediate Algebra I Advanced problem solving; TI-Nspire technology to enhance instruction; Project Based Learning: “Personal Finance: Budgeting” Preparation for high school placement exams Middle School

Woolrich Grant: TI Technology In depth program at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire. Learned the in’s and out’s of the new TI-Nspire hardware and software. Workshops on Problem Solving methodology.

TI-Nspire Navigator System Technology is in the students’ hands Instant Polling Immediate feedback for the student and the teacher Lessons are self- paced
