25 Correction Needed? Unhealthy Attitude God looks only at our hearts, not our external actions. Correction The scriptures refuse to divorce persons from their actions or their hearts from their deeds. Verbal confessions [liturgy] do not prove genuine piety, nor are they the main evidence…rather, actions…are proof of a transformed heart. Daniel Block Danger …that people will sing our songs, be moved emotionally, but it may not translate into transformed behavior. 26 Not Impressed by Mere Externals What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to walk humbly before your God. Micah 6:6-8 What might Evangelicals expect of OT instead? To steadfastly perform the OT rituals? To scrupulously present offerings, sacrifices? In OT theology, true piety is not demonstrated primarily by impressive ritual, but by doing justice, by walking humbly before God. 27 Not Impressed by Mere Externals Security does not rest on performance of rituals Security does not rest on performance of rituals Thus says the Lord Amos 5:21-24 Thus says the Lord Amos 5:21-24 I hate, I despise your feasts And I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; And the peace offerings of your fattened animals I will not look upon them. Take away from me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever flowing stream. 28 Not Impressed by Mere Externals Samuel Has YHWH as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as obeying the voice of YHWH? Look, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen [is preferable to] the fat of rams. I Sam 15:22 Affirmed by Scribe & Jesus in NT [Scribe]…to love him with all the heart…to love one’s neighbor as oneself – this is much more important than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. Jesus saw that he answered wisely… You are not far from the kingdom of God.
