Mr. Altorfer Science Living Things Need Energy Section 18.2 Pages 484 to 489
3
The Energy Connection Organisms can be divided into 3 groups based on how they get energy: 1.Producers: 2.Consumers: 3.Decomposers
4
The Energy Connection Producers: Organisms that use sunlight to make their food. Producers make their own food through a process called photosynthesis. –Examples: Plants, algae, some bacteria.
5
The Energy Connection All of these organisms produce their own food through photosynthesis.
6
Consumers: Organisms that eat other organisms to get energy. –H–Herbivore: Consumer that eats plants. Example: rabbit –C–Carnivore: Consumer that eats animals. Example: lion –O–Omnivore: Consumer that eats both plants and animals. Example: people, bears
7
Herbivores Omnivores Carnivores
8
The Energy Connection Decomposers: Organisms that eat dead animals or plants. –Examples: worms, insects, bacteria
9
Food Chains and Food Webs Food Chain- A diagram that shows how the energy in food flows from one organism to another. Food Web- A diagram that shows the feeding relationships between organisms in an ecosystem. (More complex than a food chain)

Energy Pyramid Energy Pyramid- Triangular diagram that shows an ecosystem's loss of energy, which results as energy passes through the ecosystem’s food chain.
