Unpleasant Flute playing Do-re-mi… Ta-ta-ti-ti-ta Playing “Taps” on the trumpet Piano, everyone played something in my family Brother played an accordion Square dancing Dosi do Promenade I don’t want to touch that person About music in general… Music play? Mom singing “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean” Dancing always had to go with music OR sleeping music We weren’t allowed to dance at my school – got in trouble for hokey pokey Loved songs with hand motions Dance routines with my friends to Madonna, Elvira Changing the words to songs to fit what we were doing Line dancing Chicken dance @ weddings!!! In roller skates! Hawaiian & Filipino Dance different based on “what the music was like”

4 W HAT WE WANT CHILDREN TO KNOW BY 9 YEARS OLD Sing on pitch Hear rhythm patterns Keep the beat Willing to play musical instruments What by age 5? Textbook sections to read for next week What do we think? Songs like ABC, Happy Birthday Can do call & response in a new tune Rhythm patterns from books, rhymes So easy to introduce all of these things in many ways We clap on a beat ourselves We match other people’s beat Iffy for 5 years old Some people don’t

5 G ROUP RESPONSE : W HAT WE DO Get in small group… What we do now Music Rhythm Movement “Creative expression” Interpretive We do… Rhythm sticks & songs that are percussion type songs Scarf dances Parachute with whatever song they like to listen to Music for transition – lunch: jazz, etc. Sing to dismiss children from Circle Time: “Michelle, jump up and down (repeat), now go wash your hands.” Music playing in the background Books that aren’t songs but are fun to “sing” – rhyming or pattern books (but sometimes others) 1 action song at the beginning of Circle Time We say hello with a “What color are your socks song” (kids wear cool socks for this) Instruments – teachers & tots parade Instruments available all day throughout the classroom Sometimes they form a rock band
