How was Germany affected by the international recession of the 1930s? Overy (1994): Unemployment Trade International production Radicalistion Whiteside (lecture)- Germany can be considered the worst hit by the depression.

What were the social policy consequences of the Nazi seizure of power? Wulff (1987)- Hitler took advantage of schemes already in place using schemes and propganda Previous schemes of Bruning, Papen and Schleicher During election only spoke about in vague terms- needed monopoly 1 st Reduction of Unemployment Law Expansion of Schleicher scheme 2 nd Reduction of Unemployment Law Autobahns Work creation Reinhardt Scheme- A billion RM Funded in 3 ways: 1. Tax vouchers 2. Sate budget 3. Personal fundings 1934- Total Expediture- 5 Billion RM

J. A Garraty Tackled unemployment through subsidies and tax rebates. Increased government control on the banks but did not nationalize them. Hitler believed that the crisis needed a firm leader, a more forceful government. The Nazis were the more successful in curing the economic ills of the 1930’s. The German leaders wanted war and used the economy to make war possible. The battle against unemployment had first priority in 1933
