3 2014 System Operator Conference 3 Learning Objective At the conclusion of this training session, you should be able to: Review the configuration of the simulated FINIST ENERGY interconnection, including: –Finist Balancing Authority (BA), neighboring BAs, and the rest of the Interconnection –total generating capacity and power plants –peak demand –transmission voltage levels –reactive control equipment

4 2014 System Operator Conference 4 Learning Objective State the basic features of OTS Finist user interface including: –Start/stop/pause the simulator (from Facilitator interface only) –Display frequency/ACE/total load –Display system one-lines and station details –Determine location of generating plants, substations and loads from symbols on the one-lines –Determine overloads or out-of-range voltages from color coding on the one-lines –Change generation, AGC control mode, interchange schedules –Change status of circuit breakers; switch in/out equipment –Recognize abnormal/emergency events from simulator displays

39 2014 System Operator Conference 39 AGC Modes A generator can be in the following active generation modes: –AGC – automatic generation control - ACE control –Droop – initial mode, follows generation schedule –LFC – load frequency control, frequency regulation –Manual – fixed active generation value (manually entered) –Offline – generator is offline

Auxiliaries must be energized for generator to start and generator will trip if auxiliaries are de- energized. Can start generator without auxiliaries with blackstart option.

This load may or may not be its own auxiliaries Started generator immediately generates power equal to the load but no more than 5% of maximum generation Load Frequency Generation The generator works for the first 20 seconds despite frequency and voltage conditions to allow operator to match island load and generation
