Music Therapy: Another Art of Healing
2
What is Music Therapy? The enhancement of human capabilities by creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music It accomplishes goals to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. It is a way to help people develop necessary skills through music
3
How Music Therapy helps in the physical, mental, social and emotional development of children with autism, Down Syndrome and physical inabilities It also helps adults with psychological problems like depression, HIV patients, last-stage cancer patients, epilepsy, and neurological difficulties Healthy people can also take it to relieve stress It strengthens communication, academic, motor and social skills
4
There are two types of music therapy- Active and Passive Active- Includes building a relationship with the therapist and the student Passive- Includes Clapping, nodding or tapping the feet but the patient may not participate directly Certain instruments are used for the treatment which the patient responds to the most -Sitar, violin, drums, guitar, keyboard or sarangi More about the article-
5
"When the child is inside the womb of the mother, he listens to the sound of the heartbeat. As soon as he is born, he responds with a loud cry. So sound and music have a deep connection with human beings. Music has proven to be a powerful tool to express one's hidden feelings and sentiments and can help to improve many health ailments”
6
“Sometimes, the children produce vocals which is improvised and used as music. If the kid hits some keys on the piano, that tone can be copied and made into music. So it's basically about allowing them to communicate”
7
Hypothesis- The more someone with an illness or disability attends Music Therapy, the better their communication skills and health will be
8
Independent Variable-
9
Dependent Variable- Improvement of health, and communication of people with illnesses or disabilities
10
The dependent variable is important… To scholars because… Scholars would like to know the importance of music therapy and how it helps as well as why it is done. To society because… Society would like to know that people’s lives are improved through music therapy so they can support it in any way they can and maybe want to go into the profession themselves. It also lets people with an illness or disability know that they can attend music therapy to improve themselves. To music therapists because… Music Therapists would like to know that they are making a difference in other people’s lives and what they are doing for their patients is working and that it is effective. (Dependent Variable- Improvement of health, and communication of people with illnesses or disabilities)
11
Social Science-
12
Psychologists would be interested to see how music therapy alters someone's personality. Music therapy could make someone happier and could change their personality in a positive way. Someone could become more positive or outgoing because of music therapy.
13
Example- “Her son responded well to music when the therapist played a tune by showing an effort to interact. Gradually, he even started to hold the instrument and tried playing it or directed the therapist to play the music through gestures. "I could see him happy to hear the music, and along with the music beat, he clapped his hands, tapped his feet and made body movements. So his interaction skills have definitely improved through the therapy,"
14
*Why is it important?* “We are right now in a phase where we need to spread more awareness.” “Many diseases can't be treated just medically, so if music therapy can be reached to many patients, it can help to improve their health and wellbeing”
