1 FARC 111- INTRODUCTION TO ART AND DESIGN
GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES (COMPETENCES) On successful completion of this course, all students will have developed knowledge and understanding of: The role of culture in shaping the lives of the people (awareness) The relationship of art and design (understanding) The process of perception (awareness) Various branches of design and their relationships The principles which govern the visual realm of design Understanding the common terminology used in different fields of design Design process and different stages a designer may go through in this process In this course students develop an appreciation and respect for: Their own cultures as well as the others’ Relating design process with cultural and perceptional issues 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

2 Culture The most common choices made by a group of people in a same region. 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

3 Culture A way of life that typifies a group.
A system of symbols meanings, cognitive schemata. A set of adaptive strategies for survival, related to ecology and resources. 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

39 WHAT ARE DESIGN ELEMENTS ?
In general DESIGN ELEMENTS are VISUAL COMPONENTS used in creating a composition or a design organization ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN ELEMENTS are MORE than just VISUAL components: In addition, they have functional, structural, spatial and other roles. Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

40 Elements of ART Elements of Design Space Color Line Shape Texture Form
General table for elements of design and art Elements of ART Elements of Design Space Color Line Shape Texture Form Value Type Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 2

41 design elements and their Characteristics (for formal aesthetics- basic design)
Point: Value/ tone Color Line: Value/Tone Texture Dimension (Size) Length Direction Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

42 Characteristics of Design Elements:
Plane: Value/ Tone Color Texture Dimension Length Width Shape Direction Proportion Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

43 Characteristics of Design Elements:
Volume: Form Value/ Tone Color Texture Dimension Length Width Depth Shape direction Proportion Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

44 X POINT ELEMENT IN ARCHITECTURE A point has NO dimension conceptually.
A point element in architecture is the projection of an element like a column vertically on a ground plane : on the PLAN. X Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

45 Example to: POINT ELEMENTS IN ARCHITECTURE
Projection of a point with a vertical linear elements

46 LINE ELEMENT IN ARCHITECTURE
A point extended in any direction will constitute a line. Linear elements in architecture can be vertical, horizontal or diagonal: Examples: Columns, obelisks, towers or Beams, bridges, pergolas etc.. Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

47 Example to: LINEAR ELEMENTS IN ARCHITECTURE
Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

48 PLANE ELEMENT IN ARCHITECTURE
A line extended in a direction other than its own, becomes a plane. A plane serves to define the boundaries of a volume. So, in the vocabulary of architecture it is a KEY element. Examples are: Floor and roof slabs, window panes, walls etc. Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

49 Example to: PLANAR ELEMENTS IN ARCHITECTURE
Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

50 Example to: PLANAR ELEMENTS IN ARCHITECTURE
Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

51 VOLUME ELEMENT IN ARCHITECTURE
A Plane extended in a direction other than its own becomes a volume. Conceptually, a volume has 3 dimensions: Length, width and depth Volume can be SOLID (form) or VOID (space) Examples: Furniture in space, buildings in urban context, etc… z y x Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

52 Example to: VOLUMETRIC ELEMENTS IN ARCHITECTURE
Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

53 Linear, Planar & Volumetric Elements in ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

54 Linear, Planar & Volumetric Elements in INTERIOR DESIGN
Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

55 Key words: Design Elements
LINEAR AND PLANAR ELEMENTS IN 2D DESIGN Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

56 LINEAR AND PLANAR ELEMENTS IN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1

57 CHARACTERISTICS OF A DESIGN ELEMENT
Size Shape Direction (orientation) Position (location on the design fld.) Number Surface Quality * COLOR * TEXTURE Key words: Design Elements 11/12 Fall Lecture 1
