The Font of All Personality Graphology for the 21 st Century BBC News. May 24, 2001 Katherine Abrahams English 393
2
Introduction In an era of computers, graphologists have determined that font can say quite a bit about one’s intent, personality, or state of mind. Different fonts and font sizes should be used for different situations.
3
Graphology Graphology is the study of handwriting Since much of letter-writing and writing of any kind has turned digital, experts look to analyze people’s choice of fonts for clues to their personalities
4
The Wrong Font? Dr. Sigman: “Using the wrong font may give people the wrong impression about you and could affect decisions that will shape your future.” Font is situational.
5
Typefaces Courier – “sensible.” Also described as “automaton-like,” cold. Use when resigning from a job on bad terms? Times New Roman – compromises between old and new fonts, but still ‘traditional’ (trustworthy?) Verdana – Professional, but appealing. Simple but more contemporary than Times New Roman. Georgia – “curvy” fonts are said to appeal more to women.
6
Font Size -In general, it is more professional to have a smaller font size for letters, appeals, etc. -“less is more”
7
Conclusion Font size should be carefully considered when writing professional letters, memos, or in presentations! Font size and face can affect the way an audience perceives the information you prepare! Questions?
