MCNC Grid Computing and Networking Services North Carolina networks include NCREN, the North Carolina State Government ITS network (community colleges and many public schools), Internet2, Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC), and City and County Governments.
3
What is NCREN? Three Primary Services Private data network—Connects UNC system institutions, Duke, & Wake via “platinum” quality WAN. Video network—Enables high quality interactive distance learning and face-to-face conferences among more than 50 university, medical school and research organization sites. Internet connections—Provides Internet and National Research Network (like Internet2 and National Lambda Rail) access, primarily on an allocated cost basis, to the 16 UNC campuses as well as other institutions of higher learning, nonprofits, and the State ITS network.
4
Governance 15 member Board of Directors, about 2/3 of which are university CIO’s and includes CIO for State of North Carolina Advisory Committees to address challenges and make recommendations to management and to UNC Office of the President(UNC-OP) MCNC GCNS Leadership works very closely with UNC-OP on strategic and tactical matters

NCREN and NCNI Integration
11
Integrating NCNI: Marrying research with production… Stimulate discovery of advanced networking solutions with focused resources Leverage best new solutions into production networking as soon as it makes sense Sharing networking operations expertise to optimize efficiency and learning curves Utilize MCNC/NCNI CORE assets (equipment, optical fibers, knowledge) across entire NCREN community
