Immune System Keeping Us Safe
2
Maryland Science Content Standard Select several body systems and explain the role of cells, tissues and organs that effectively carry out a vital function for the organism, such as defense
3
Objective Title:Homeland Security Date:8/8/2015 I will be able to identify the types of organisms that cause disease, describe where pathogens come from and be able to explain how infectious disease is spread
4
Lesson Question: How can diseases spread and how do they enter the body?
5
Engage your thinking… Think about it…. What would happen if you were sick and shook hands with everyone in this class? Why?
6
Infectious Disease… What is it? Infectious disease is a disease that can pass from one person to another. They are caused by something called a pathogen. Infectious disease can spread among a population in a number of different ways.
7
Let’s explore pathogens! Let’s take a look at the different types of pathogens that can affect your body’s ability to maintain homeostasis…(remember that vocab word??) Use the website above and your books (Chapter 5: Section 1) to answer the following: 1. What is a pathogen? 2. What are the three major groups of pathogens? 3. How can a pathogen cause disease? 4. What are some types of disease/illness caused by pathogens? http://biop.ox.ac.uk/www/lj2001/lea/lea-4.html http://kidshealth.org/kid/talk/qa/germs.html
8
Explain… How are diseases spread? Use your text (Chapter 5: Section 1) to explain four ways that diseases can spread through a population of people. Be sure to include examples!
9
Extension… The spread of cholera… Look at “Sharpen your Skills” to answer the following: 1. What is cholera? Explain. 2. What was Dr. Snow’s hypothesis? Was it correct? 3. Explain how Dr. Snow was able to find out how cholera is spread.
10
Evaluate: How do pathogens spread and cause disease? Please explain using information from your text and our class investigations.
11
Evaluate yourself… Can You: Identify the types of organisms that cause disease. Describe where pathogens come from.Explain how infectious disease is spread.
