5 “K-12 Ohio Model” The objectives: build a scaleable model that increases the number, size, and quality of Chinese language and culture programs in Ohio school districts; build a scaleable model that increases the number, size, and quality of Chinese language and culture programs in Ohio school districts; create opportunities for active and close cooperation among these same districts; build a diverse “learning community” of urban, suburban, and rural districts under the umbrella of NEALRC at OSU.

14 “The Highly Qualified Teacher” is the key to success SPEAC (Summer Programs East Asian Concentration), June 22 ~ August 6, 2009 June 22 ~ August 6, 2009 A n intensive seven-week training program which develops participants' Chinese or Japanese language teaching skills through lectures, master classes, workshops, and hands-on teaching, with fifteen graduate credits. All the courses of this program are closely integrated with the intensive Chinese and Japanese language programs.

15 A lternative Teacher Licensure Training Program for Chinese and Japanese (2006-2008) A joint program by the Educational Service Center of Franklin County (ESC of Franklin County) and OSU Upon successful completion of the yearlong program, the state Praxis exam, and a background check, students will be eligible for a provisional Ohio teaching license. The 12-month, 36-quarter credit hour program is an alternative to a traditional degree-seeking curriculum that prepares students for licensure.

16 Workshops The OSU K-12 Chinese Flagship Program organized two-day workshops for current and new teachers of Chinese language An introduction to performance- based pedagogy, an overview of materials for high school students featuring Chinese: Communicating in the Culture (CCC), and a demonstration of a CCC class.

17 Ohio Association of Teachers of Chinese The OSU NEALRC and Flagship facilitated the creation of the Ohio Association of Teachers of Chinese (OATC) in mid 2008 Promote and improve the study and teaching of Mandarin Chinese for K-12 students and adults, and encourage a spirit of professional cooperation among its members

18 Making the Global Connection – Linking Students and China in the 21st Century (2006-2008) OSU and Ohio Department of Education (ODE) have co- conducted three annual conferences from 2006 to 2008. The latest one focused on improving and sustaining existing programs. A track for Chinese language teachers to share resources and learn new skills. 22 Regents’ Chinese Academy Exciting opportunity for globally oriented 11th and 12th graders No costs - Tuition, textbooks, stipend provided Earn dual college and/or high school credits Learn to be an effective life-long language learner 3-week intensive on-campus weekday classes and follow-up instruction

23 Develop performance-based K-12 curriculum Performance-based pedagogy targets language use in real contexts. Chinese culture is integrated into language teaching and learning. Curriculum systematically follows a prescribed learning cycle and difficulty level of vocabulary and structure.

24 Guidelines for Curriculum design (2) Curriculum suits the target learners’ language needs, age, and interests. In the initial stages, the curriculum focuses primarily on speaking and listening; reading and writing come later.
