Biomedical Engineering
2
OVERVIEW We will be explaining: What Biomedical Engineers do Their salaries Potential job positions Current inventions and future trends Cost of losing a semester Classes offered in FIU Main Employers Ethical Cases
3
What is Biomedical Engineering? The branch of engineers that think up and create medical devices. Stethoscopes Echograms CT Scans Dialysis machines Even syringes
4
History Was first recognized as an official discipline in the 1940’s But was actually first seen in: Stethoscope Prosthetic Body Parts
5
Sub-disciplines Instruments and Device Engineers Design and create a model of what they want to create, and how it is supposed to work. Some current examples attributed by this branch: Jarvik-7 artificial Pace maker Prosthetic eyes Prosthetic breasts Prosthetic testes, limbs, and joints.

7
Sub-disciplines Bio Material Engineers They obtain the ideas of the Instruments and Device Engineer and make the product biocompatible by choosing materials that are Non-toxic Durable Non-carcinogenic These are crucial factors considering they will be implanted into a patient
8
Sub-disciplines Image Processing They create non-invasive exploratory machinery, this allows for lower risk investigation of internal problems in a patient Some machines are Echograms Used to view the heart to identify murmurs, or arrhythmia Also used to monitor fetuses throughout development CT Scans Identify tumors, kidney stones, ovarian cysts.
9
Description of Courses at FIU u* = required strengths (classes that require math, science, or engineering)
10
Possible Functions Designer Basically come up with ideas and sketches for biomedical devices Relates to Instrument and Device Engineer Analyzer Analyzes designers idea, and attempts to make it functional as well as biocompatible Relates to Materials Engineer
11
Possible Functions Presenter (To Clients) Present the new product to doctors hospitals and clinics, proving its simplicity and usefulness in order to have a client to promote this product to patients. Presenter (To Patients) This includes doctors, just having information on as well as using the new product so that more people learn of its simplicity and effectiveness.
12
Sue H. Abreu Career Life: Nuclear Medicine U.S. Army Medical Corps President of ICANL Life Outside Work: Skydiving U.S. Parachute Team Volunteer: Team Doctor
13
Ethical Cases “Infants Under Pressure” MedTech fires professional engineer, Sam Wilson, who discovers error in infant respirators Stem Cell Human embryos used for research cause controversy In vitro Fertilization “test-tube babies”
14
Future Trends Healthcare dominating Innovations: Browsing brain, world-wide diagnosing More efficient prosthesis Cure cancer

Calculating Cost of Losing One Semester Over 30 Years For all years after the first: Let x = years passed, s = Starting Salary S = Your Salary = s(1.05 x ) Comparing Salary (C)= S(1.05) Loss Per Month = C – S S(1.05) – S S(1.05 – 1) (s(1.05 x ))(.05)
