1 Developing placements within the Private, Voluntary & Independent sector Lou Sherratt PVI Project Lead University of Derby

2 Background A workshop was held in November 2012 at The University of Derby. 30 Delegates attended from a variety of sectors- HEI’s, Hospital Trusts and PVI. Speakers included a Chief Executive from local NHS Foundation Trust and 2 members of staff from a private hospital. Key take home messages from the workshop included- A dedicated person to develop and support placements within the PVI sector and the value of non-traditional placements.

3 Progress to date April 2013: University awarded funding to allow a member of academic staff dedicated time ( 2.5 days) per week to increase capacity within the PVI sector and provide support to these placements. June 2013: Article published within Nursing Times. March 2014: Celebrating Success Conference April 2014: Further funding allocated to continue project for a year focusing on Allied Health Professionals. March 2015: RCN Education Conference March 2015: Shortlisted for Nursing Times Award. June 2015- University of Derby conference for HEI’s.

4 Breakdown of placements pre project- Nursing Nursing Homes:6 Private Hospitals:2 Practice Nurses:0 Other( including Charities): 1 Hospice Total= 9

5 Placement Capacity March 2015 Nursing Homes: 17 Practice Nurses: 12 Private Hospitals: 10 Other: 9 Total: 48 Being developed: Nursing Homes: 4 Practice Nurses: 6 Private Hospital: 0 Other: 3

6 Practice Nurse Placements 12 Practices currently used as a placement. 3 are having year long 1 st and 2 nd year students on a Hub placement. 9 are having 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd Year students for a 2 week spoke. Work in progress with 1 of the Hub placements re management placement for 3 rd years.

7 Challenges faced- GP Practices GP Practices reluctant to take Student Nurses. Reasons include: Small practices with 1-2 Practice Nurses. Concerns raised in relation to the effect on patient consultations. Increased workload for Practice Nurses. Staffing issues.

8 GP Practices- Benefits. CPD for Practice Nurses. Potential to increase numbers of Newly Registered Nurses seeking a career in Practice Nursing. Practice Nurses able to share expertise with students. Students gain a valuable insight into this area.

9 The Future? Funding allocated until March 2015. Increase placement capacity for AHP’s. Research project- Challenging stereotypical views of student nurse placements. Increase numbers of final placement management students within PVI sector- currently 4 students on management placement within private hospitals. Audit employment of Newly Registered Nurses within the PVI sector. Increase Hub placements within care homes and GP surgeries. Partnership working with placements in relation to continual professional development of Registered Nurses and development of health care assistants.
