Where does our food come from?
2
Big Questions: What is the food industry? What are genetically modified foods and how do they impact me? How do we grow food? Why is water so important to food? How many resources get destroyed within a year? How is fast food made and why is it so fast? How can food deserts impact people’s health?
3
What is the food industry? How is food made in factories? How does it impact what I eat? Do all countries have the same industrialized system that USA does? Is all of agriculture industrialized? What is and what isn’t?
4
What are genetically modified foods and how do they impact me? How safe are they? Should we label GM foods? What is the difference between genetically modified food and genetically engineered? What are the benefits and detriments? What can golden rice do and other foods like this? How can humans be affected by a growth hormone in cows? How do GM food compare with organic?
5
How do we grow food? What factors affect the price of food? How much does it “cost” to eat? What factors affect food availability? Less land (agricultural practices, more people) Less water (drought, dust bowl, water cycle) Climate change (weather patterns, hurricanes, flooding)
6
First Topic: What is sustainable agriculture? Big Questions it addresses: What is the food industry? What are genetically modified foods and how do they impact me? How do we grow food?
7
The food industry

Your turn! You will given a role and you and your partner (I choose) will be presenting your approach to sustainable agriculture. This will include: The definition through your role’s eyes The benefits of your sustainable agriculture The negatives of your sustainable agriculture In order to understand the definition and the different meanings of it, we will watch 5 short videos and answer questions. You will work with a partner after each video to answer the questions.

Ag Biotech 1. What is ag biotech? Agricultural biotechnology is a collection of scientific techniques used to improve plants, animals and microorganisms. 2. What are the benefits? Helping plants grow in better conditions (with less land, less water) Better access to vaccines 3. How does the video reach out to the consume? Scenery Music Showing the benefits without explanation

Ag Biotech 4. How can ag biotech help with diseases? Easier access to vaccines Vaccines and medicines through plants such as tobacco 5. How could adding a vaccine to soy milk vials for malaria be helpful? Giving malaria medicine to people who cannot get it Reduce malaria Make the medicine more affordable 6. What else can ag biotech do for the economy? Create jobs

Sustainable Agriculture One definition “In simplest terms, sustainable agriculture is the production of food, fiber, or other plant or animal products using farming techniques that protect the environment, public health, human communities, and animal welfare. This form of agriculture enables us to produce healthful food without compromising future generations' ability to do the same” http://www.gracelinks.org/246/sustainable-agriculture-the-basics http://www.gracelinks.org/246/sustainable-agriculture-the-basics

Your task Using the handout- Sustainable and Industrial compare these two processes and in the impact they have on your ecological address. In your opinion. Write a paper (one page) that expresses your opinion on whether genetically modified seeds can or should be used in sustainable farming practices.
15
Your task: To create a poster with the following items: Definition of sustainable agriculture from your role’s perspective. How do the biotech companies or the nonconventional farms provide the world with sustainable agriculture? What do they do? – 30 points Positive things about this type of sustainable agriculture – 30 points Negative things about this type of sustainable agriculture – 30 points Presentation – 10 points
