WARM UP & UNDERSTANDING DECIMALS

There are four basic decimal square models

SORT BY COLOR ACTIVITY With your partner, sort your deck of decimal squares by color SHARE How did your team sort the deck? (color and?) How do you think kids would sort the deck? What questions would kids ask while sorting?

TENTHS NUMBER LINE ACTIVITY With your partner, use your tenths squares to measure and mark the tenths decimals between 0 and 2.0 on your tenths number line SHARE Show your number lines What questions would kids ask while doing this?

SORT BY EQUIVALENT ACTIVITY With your partner, sort your deck of decimal squares into equivalent value sets SHARE How many sets with one card? Values? How many sets with two cards? Values? How many sets with three cards? Values? What questions would kids ask while sorting?

DECIMAL MATCH Shuffle and place red and green Decimal Squares face down Place 2 face up on table Shuffle and place Decimal Cards face down Place 2 face up on table Play: Take turns picking up one square or one card at a time, if the values match any square or card, you win them all. Player with the most wins.

DECIMAL PLACE VALUE GAME Each player: Draw a place value table Roll two dice (discard rolls with sum 11 or 12) Record your sum in one of the place value table columns (one # per turn) Three turns each player The player with the greatest decimal WINS!
