The motion still must be voted into a bylaw – this is expected to occur in October 2012. In June 2012, Toronto City council, during a discussion to repeal the 5 cent bag charge, voted instead to ban single use plastic bags in the city of Toronto effective January 1, 2013.

* Gunther Mele is a licensee of EPI’s patented oxo- biodegradable additive. * When added to polyethylene used in plastic bags, EPI creates a plastic that maintains all the strength characteristics but will degrade once disposed in a landfill. * Toronto City council has stipulated that biodegradable plastics will not be permitted.
