3. Unit & Grade Level We will be teaching a unit on the state of Ohio. The unit will be taught to a 2 nd grade class in Fairborn, Ohio.

4. Objectives The 2 nd grade students will: –Locate the state of Ohio on a map. –Identify the state bird, flower, flag, tree, beverage, and insect. –Participate in class discussions and activities relating to the state of Ohio. –Name the capital of Ohio. –Name 2 famous people from Ohio.

20. Student Activities Flag Making Buckeye Candy Project Ladybug Shape Poems Air Force Museum Fieldtrip

21. Flag Making The students will make an Ohio State Flag using their hand prints for the red stripes, blue tempera paint for the triangle, and star stickers. The giant flag will be displayed outside of our classroom.

22. Buckeye Candy The students, in groups of four, will make candy buckeyes. They will make the buckeyes out of chocolate and peanut butter. We will sell the buckeyes during our school bake sale.

23. Ladybug Shape Poems The students will write 3 words that come to mind when they think of ladybugs. Next, they will be given a pattern of a ladybug and a blank sheet of paper. The students will write their 3 ladybug words repeatedly following the outline of the ladybug. They will remove the pattern and their words will be in the shape of a ladybug! Students will color and decorate their poems.

24. Field Trip The students will go on a field trip to the Air Force Museum. After the tour, the students will be required to write a paragraph about what they learned and draw a picture about their favorite event of the day.
