2. What is an Impulse Switch? Impulse is an EMG (Electromyography) sensing switch i.e. senses tiny voluntary muscle contractions. Impulse detects and wirelessly transmits the EMG signal to a Bluetooth receiver. Specialized software in a Windows PC processes the signal as a traditional switch or click of the mouse. 4. Impulse States Standby: – Standby Mode occurs when the Impulse is charged, and no lights are on. Transmitting: – Transmitting Mode occurs when the Impulse is turned on and the blue light flashes once every second. Pairing: – Pairing Mode occurs when the Impulse is being paired with a computer. 6. Charging Fully charge the Impulse prior to use. The Impulse needs to be put into Standby Mode in order to charge If the Impulse is not in Standby Mode during charge, it may cause undesirable operation. 7. Installation PC Compatibility: PC or compatible computer running Windows® XP (Service Pack 2) or Windows Vista™. Requires one available USB 2.0 or 1.1 port. Do not plug Bluetooth adapter in until prompted to do so. Close all software and disable anti-virus software. Insert Impulse CD and follow prompts. 10. Pairing the Impulse Sensor Start by click “Link Manager.” Click “Next” once the sensor is in Pairing Mode (blinking blue and red), and then click “Pair New” to begin pairing the sensor. 11. Sensor Location The Impulse sensor should be placed over a muscle that the user has control of. The Impulse Sensor should be placed in the center of that muscle, parallel to the muscle fiber for optimum EMG sensing. Proper site preparation is essential to obtain a good EMG signal. 16. Placing Electrodes are single use and disposable. The contact surfaces are pre-gelled with a hypo allergenic gel that is water soluble. When applying the electrode, it is critical to obtain a good skin to electrode contact. Hair can interfere with the contact. Clean the desired placement site with an alcohol wipe. Remove the adhesive backing from the electrode and place it securely on the user. (The metal snaps face away from the skin.) 18. Auto Calibration Click “Auto Calibrate” When prompted, contract and relax the muscle site several times until the screen reads “Finished Calibrating” The EMG levels have now been determined. These settings will be saved and calibration should not be necessary on a daily basis. Summary If you have never done a Windows PC device install, it’s likely you will need Tech Support If experienced with device installation…this may be a little tricky but nothing unusual. – place sensor in transmit mode and not connected to the consumer before launching Impulse software. Actual program displays and controls may be unfamiliar to non-technical users. Installation and initial debug required about three hours…for me This is a sophisticated high tech device that provides “switch” activation from only the slightest of muscle movement.
