the Impulse “Switch” 1Daniel Overman DIS5274/10/2010

What is an Impulse Switch? Impulse is an EMG (Electromyography) sensing switch i.e. senses tiny voluntary muscle contractions. Impulse detects and wirelessly transmits the EMG signal to a Bluetooth receiver. Specialized software in a Windows PC processes the signal as a traditional switch or click of the mouse. Combining this wireless connectivity with accessibility programs allows users to control their computer with the smallest of muscle activity. 2Daniel Overman DIS5274/10/2010

Impulse States Standby: – Standby Mode occurs when the Impulse is charged, and no lights are on. Transmitting: – Transmitting Mode occurs when the Impulse is turned on and the blue light flashes once every second. Pairing: – Pairing Mode occurs when the Impulse is being paired with a computer. Charging: – Charging Mode occurs when the Impulse is plugged into the charger. 4Daniel Overman DIS5274/10/2010

Charging Fully charge the Impulse prior to use. The Impulse needs to be put into Standby Mode in order to charge If the Impulse is not in Standby Mode during charge, it may cause undesirable operation. A red light indicates the device is connected to the charger. The red light will turn off when charge is complete. 6Daniel Overman DIS5274/10/2010

Installation PC Compatibility: PC or compatible computer running Windows® XP (Service Pack 2) or Windows Vista™. Requires one available USB 2.0 or 1.1 port. Do not plug Bluetooth adapter in until prompted to do so. Close all software and disable anti-virus software. Insert Impulse CD and follow prompts. This will check and install the following programs: –.NET – Impulse Software – Toshiba Bluetooth Stack (Bluetooth Driver) 7Daniel Overman DIS5274/10/2010

Initial Setup Impulse Software Window Click “Link Manager” to Pairing Window access the pairing window 8Daniel Overman DIS5274/10/2010

Pairing Window “Pair New” Button 9Daniel Overman DIS5274/10/2010

Pairing the Impulse Sensor Start by click “Link Manager.” Click “Next” once the sensor is in Pairing Mode (blinking blue and red), and then click “Pair New” to begin pairing the sensor. Once the device is paired, the Impulse software will read “Connected” and the sensor will stop blinking red and blue. 10Daniel Overman DIS5274/10/2010

Sensor Location The Impulse sensor should be placed over a muscle that the user has control of. The Impulse Sensor should be placed in the center of that muscle, parallel to the muscle fiber for optimum EMG sensing. Proper site preparation is essential to obtain a good EMG signal. See following examples 11Daniel Overman DIS5274/10/2010

Placing Electrodes are single use and disposable. The contact surfaces are pre-gelled with a hypo allergenic gel that is water soluble. When applying the electrode, it is critical to obtain a good skin to electrode contact. Hair can interfere with the contact. Clean the desired placement site with an alcohol wipe. Remove the adhesive backing from the electrode and place it securely on the user. (The metal snaps face away from the skin.) Snap the Impulse EMG sensor onto the electrode. 16Daniel Overman DIS5274/10/2010

Calibration “Auto Calibrate” button 17Daniel Overman DIS5274/10/2010

Auto Calibration Click “Auto Calibrate” When prompted, contract and relax the muscle site several times until the screen reads “Finished Calibrating” The EMG levels have now been determined. These settings will be saved and calibration should not be necessary on a daily basis. Note: If you have poor connection of the electrode to skin then the signal from the Impulse to the computer can take several minutes to stabilize. 18Daniel Overman DIS5274/10/2010

Assigning Functions Simulated Actions with Primary Activation: – Determines how you the Impulse responds when you first activate. Simulated Actions with Secondary Activation: – Lets you change how you want the Impulse to respond when you initiate 2nd level activation. (“Play Alarm” is selected by default). 21Daniel Overman DIS5274/10/2010

Threshold Adjustment Left most + button will set the threshold bar by increments of 10. Right most + button will set the threshold bar by increments of 1. Color Dot: Blue – Not Activating Primary Activation Red – Activating Primary Activation Threshold number can be set from 1 to 100. Right most - button will set the threshold bar by decrements of 1. Left most - button will set the threshold bar by decrements of 10. 22Daniel Overman DIS5274/10/2010

Impulse Help Manual Button: – Launches PDF manual that is installed on your computer. Email Support: – Launches your email client with AbleNet’s Impulse Technical Support email address in the “To” field. We will Contact Information: – Call Technical Support during normal business hours for support. If needed a qualified technician can connect remotely to your computer to assist you using the “Request Remote Support” link. Request Remote Support: – Allows a qualified technician to assist with setting up the Impulse software. This link will give the technician the ability to control your computer remotely. 23Daniel Overman DIS5274/10/2010

Summary If you have never done a Windows PC device install, it’s likely you will need Tech Support If experienced with device installation…this may be a little tricky but nothing unusual. – place sensor in transmit mode and not connected to the consumer before launching Impulse software. Actual program displays and controls may be unfamiliar to non-technical users. Installation and initial debug required about three hours…for me This is a sophisticated high tech device that provides “switch” activation from only the slightest of muscle movement. The “price” and “prize” are appropriately proportional! 25Daniel Overman DIS5274/10/2010
