Louis Kahn Louis Kahn was trained in traditional style of architecture. But began to practice during the Modernist style. He never seemed to fall into either of the styles, yet drew from both. In the Salk Institute he used materials such as reinforced concrete, steel and glass. These materials were drawn out of the Modernist style. Without the modernist style, the labs would not have existed. He used a 34M span truss so that the labs were open and easily accessible. The traditional forms in the building are the columns and spatial planning.

Group Work Design Basis: Concrete Our group decided to use concrete tilt-up panels for our office and warehouse design. These are the plans and sections we developed.

Development My design is based on Louis Kahn’s Salk Institute because I love the angled façade. Before this, I had in mind a curved façade, then I had one angled window. This became four. The design was kept fairly open, similar to that of Kahn’s for the Salk Institute, however due to using load-bearing walls and two reinforced concrete floors (first and second) my office and showroom required some columns through the centre.

Concrete Construction Concrete tilt-up panels can be poured in- situ. These site-cast panels need particular requirements at the site. My design uses factory precast panels, allowing for more variety in finishes and dimensions. Panel weight must be assessed so that cranes can lift them into a vertical position.
7
Load bearing Concrete Panels A 15-20mm gap must be allowed between panels for movement. Size of panels depends on what weight the crane can lift.
