Do Now 1) How do the layers of the Earth affect us? 2) What is a cycle
3) What is a cycle you can think of? Why is it a cycle 4) What do you know about rocks?
2
How one rock changes into another
The rock Cycle How one rock changes into another
3
Agenda DO NOW YET Objective TET Lecture on Types of Rocks Weathering
Erosion Exit Ticket
4
YET 1) Name the layers of the Earth in the correct order from outer to inner 2) What are convection currents? Why do they occur? 3) How do convection affect the Earth?
5
Objective SWBAT explain the rock cycle and what powers it
SWBAT explain the different parts of the rock cycle; weathering & erosion specifically
6
Today’s Exit Ticket How do we classify rocks as either igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic? In which type of rock does bedding normally occur? Explain what bedding is. Metamorphic rocks are formed through high levels of heat deep within the ground. Where does this heat come from? Imagine that you are near a volcano. Which type of rock can you expect to find? Why? John has a metamorphic rock and Aaron wants a sedimentary rock. What must happen to John’s metamorphic rock before it becomes a sedimentary rock?
7
Rocks A rock is a group of minerals bound together
The three types of rock are Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic Rock
9
Rock Cycle* The Rock cycle demonstrates the relationships among the 3 major rock groups (Sedimentary, Igneous, and Metamorphic) It is powered by: the internal heat of the Earth the energy from the SUN It involves processes on the Earth’s surface as well as the Earth’s interior
11
Igneous Rock Igneous- Comes from the Latin word ‘ignis’ meaning fire
Formation When magma hardens or lava cools. Destruction Weathering and Erosion - the removal of rock due to wind, water, ice or gravity.
12
Igneous Rocks Hints that you are seeing an igneous rock: Bubbles
Glassy appearance Big grains of minerals
13
Bubbles

16
Sedimentary Rock Sedimentary- Comes from the Latin word ‘sedimentum’ meaning settling. Formation Sediment from weathering and erosion is deposited and then rock is formed from cementation. Destruction Under high pressure and heat
17
Sedimentary Rocks Hints that you are seeing a sedimentary rock:
Flat layers Mix of particle size Sedimentary rocks create a process called BEDDING. BEDDING occurs when large amounts of sediment are deposited and turn into large rock formations
18
Flat Layers

20
Metamorphic Rock Metamorphic- Comes from the Greek word
‘meta’ meaning to change Metamorphic rocks change due to heat & pressure Formation Rocks are changed by heat or pressure. This is often when how magma is introduced to a body of rock. Destruction Metamorphic rocks are destroyed when they are heated up as magma.
21
Metamorphic rocks Hints that you are seeing a metamorphic rock:
Bending layers Squished Grains Layers in metamorphic rock are called FOLIATION

WHAT OF ROCK? TYPE
30
TYPE WHAT OF ROCK? This rock was formed by the compaction and cementation of sediment
31
WHAT OF ROCK? TYPE This rock was formed by melting and cooling of magma.
32
WHAT OF ROCK? TYPE This rock was formed by heat and pressure deep within the Earth.

34
WHAT OF ROCK? TYPE
35
WHAT OF ROCK? TYPE This type of rock is found near volcanos.
36
WHAT OF ROCK? TYPE This type of rock is found deep within the Earth.
37
WHAT OF ROCK? TYPE This type of rock is much like our ice cream, it starts as a liquid and then cools into a solid.
38
WHAT OF ROCK? TYPE This type of rock is much like our sandwich. It is made of many layers stacked on top of each other.
39
WHAT OF ROCK? TYPE This type of rock is like our cake. It is baked but not melted.
40
WHAT OF ROCK? TYPE Conglomerate is an example of this type of rock.
41
WHAT OF ROCK? TYPE This type of rock can be intrusive or extrusive.
42
WHAT OF ROCK? TYPE This type of rock can be clastic or chemical.
43
Exit Ticket How do we classify rocks as either igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic? In which type of rock does bedding normally occur? Explain what bedding is. Metamorphic rocks are formed through high levels of heat deep within the ground. Where does this heat come from? Imagine that you are near a volcano. Which type of rock can you expect to find? Why? John has a metamorphic rock and Aaron wants a sedimentary rock. What must happen to John’s metamorphic rock before it becomes a sedimentary rock?
