Who and What

Project proposition format Format You can use a simple text document, slide presentation, web page or a short video … we accept everything on the web, from microsoft office, openoffice, libreoffice. Keep the format simple, we’re interested in the idea more than the layout. email / webconf We recommend you first test your idea by sending it by email, we’ll let you know what we think, how you may improve it. You can also participate to our weekly public webconf to exchange with us. Final submission When you think your project proposition is final, you’ll have to post it on Intel Developer Zone http://software.intel.com (free registration) as an article and send the link by email to officially submit it.http://software.intel.com

Team Team work You can propose project as individuals, but it’s usually better to work with friends as a team. First because it’s a easier to keep you motivated for months, but also because that’s the way researchers and engineer work in the real world. So get used to it as early as possible. Different skills To be successful in this program, you should understand a little about marketing, we’ll evaluate in detail the quality of user interfaces and the final presentation is very important. So we suggest you integrate some design and marketing skills in your team (design students ? friends interested in business ?). It would be sad to see a great software not reaching full potential because of a bad UI or a bad presentation.

1. Describe the idea

Innovation How do you find a really innovative idea ? Try to solve a real life problem, talk with professionals from a non computer related field or a non governmental association. As software developers, our mission is to help others, solve problems, allow people to do new things they really need or would like to do. Check our list of ideas on www.intel-software-academic-program.com to help you start thinking, or take one of the ideas as project.www.intel-software-academic-program.com It will take a least a few weeks to find a good idea, talk with people around you to see how they react to your idea. Keep your mind open and always have a bloc note with you to note ideas, they come at unexpected times …

2. Explain why your idea is important for users

Entrepreneurship Think like an entrepreneur We prefer ideas related to a real life business logic. Even when you develop for free an open source software for a non governmental association, you have to think about who’s going to pay for the deployment, who’s going to maintain it, why users will really want to use it. That’s why some ideas may seem OK from a technical point of vue, but not real life ideas. Ask yourself : Why would users like to use your solution ? Who’s going to finance the development of the project in the future ? Imagine you want to create your start-up in 1 or 2 years, and only keep the ideas you could use to launch this company. Think like an entrepreneur !

3. Describe your project technically

Technical description Describe what hardware your project is targeting Is it for tablet ? Android phone ? Ultrabooks ? XeonPHI ? Robotics ? … etc. It should be intel based devices, as we unfortunately can’t provide help for projects on iPhone, Win8 phones, CUDA … etc. Describe what software your project is targeting What language/framework/SDK… are you planning to use ? Use intel hardware/software at 100% (or more) We prefer projects using the hardware at 100%. Example : An 3D cpu intensive app using the native NDK on android is usually more interesting for us than a simple web page you can browse from the same android device.

4. Caracterize the development effort needed

Development effort How long is the project ? Is it a 3 month summer school project ? A 6 month project for university ? A full 1 year project you want to develop on your own free time ? What amount of work are you planning to dedicate ? During this period, how much time do you plan to dedicate to your project ? Everything is OK with us, from a simple short project in 50h, to a large ambitious project in 2000h as a team. Describe your current skills level Describe your skills level : what year of training ? What technologies or development frameworks do you already know ? This program is a good opportunity to learn, so it’s OK if you now little about a technology you plan to use, but it’s always good to know !

Example project description

Perceptual Driver Safety The problem Driver falling asleep while driving is a major problem. Drivers usually don’t even notice it, and consequences can be fatal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPlOQFgh7F0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPlOQFgh7F0 According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drowsy driving is a factor in more than 100,000 crashes, resulting in 1,550 deaths and 40,000 injuries annually. (Wikipedia)

Perceptual Driver Safety Our solution We propose a software+hardware solution to monitor the driver body/head movement using a perceptual camera linked to a Win8 tablet or PC. How it works The infrared camera can detect fine body/head movements associated with drowsiness, and the detection can be done by night, with no ambient light in the car. The sensors of the tablet/PC will also provide information about a possible car deviation.

Perceptual Driver Safety Immediate Action When we detect a behavior associated with drowsiness, we’ll emit a sound to wake up the driver. Going further We’ll also keep the GPS coordinates of the event to gather statistics : some places are inducing drowsiness frequently. Detecting these places by merging stats from various drivers (with their approval) may help prevent accidents for all drivers by improving signalisation.

Perceptual Driver Safety Technical aspects We’ll use the intel perceptual SDK and the creative perceptual camera to develop a Win8 desktop app. We already have a Win8+VisualStudio desktop PC. We’ll develop our prototype with the freely available SDK alone, but we’ll need to test and validate our software with the camera after that (sending intel the software, or intel sending us the camera). To deploy our finished software at the end, we’d like to have access to a Win8 tablet.

Perceptual Driver Safety About us : Paul Guermonprez, Cedric Andreolli We’re a group of 2 students from « Paris University XXIII », currently entering 4th year of software engineering. About the project We need to propose a mandatory project during our 4th year in december, with evaluation in may 2014. We plan to start this project in advance, during summer 2013 and use it for the mandatory university project. We also plan to use it for the Imagine Cup.
