2.   a word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence, and forming the main part of the predicate of a sentence, such as hear, become, happen. (a verb is a word that we use to communicate action.)  Verbs tell about the subject of the sentence, and they are found in the predicate.  Verbs can express physical action, mental action, and a state of being.
